Well, when you can't improve, it doesn't pay to fret about it.    \:D/

I did the CNet speed test and got a bigger number.  It said 19.6 kbs.   8-)

One of these days they'll have something out here.    =D>

With all the so called Telco Broadband Stimulus money that was available you would think that they would concentrate
on rural areas with less or no broadband coverage! Instead the ones that took advantage of that are reluctant to say what they actually did with the money

I have access to much faster service here than what I have now but it comes with a price and too many strings attached.

I do wish they would place a DSLAM in my back yard so I could do better than 3 meg down and 650 up but alas another pipe dream!  I am Thankful that the reliability factor of what I currently have  has actually improved greatly!!  To begin with 2 tin cans and some good quality string could have beaten the pants off of it's reliability!

Hopefully someday the cable folks will build plant out your way or the local telco will and you can get better service!  But actually you are to be commended for getting the most out of whats available in your area =D>

Update:
Line tech came out and changed all the fittings on the pole and house side. He also found moisture in the junction box on the pole. So far things are looking better as the log appears clean without any warnings as stated in previous posts. Here are the updated log files which is information only.

Update: Well the problems still exists and I just put another call into Comcast. I wished a little bit to soon I guess. Here are the logs in the modem. Since Comcast is dealing with a line problem, which effectively ruled all components in my household out,  it could possibly be one of the signal amps on the wire itself. I may have a visit with my neighbor tomorrow and review his logs and run a couple of speed scans to run as a comparison..  #-o

Our Roadrunner connection at work kept intermittently dropping in the afternoons from about 3pm into the evening at work for about a week.  Finally last Thursday in the afternoon it dropped and was off for several hours.  They seemed to have found the problem whatever it was that time and fixed it.  I never seen any trucks so it must have been back upstream somewhere.

It's most likely a server issue.  I just got on this morning after being down for 3 1/2 hours, here at work.

I had exactly the same prob w/ Knology. Initially, it was all my fault, until I provided tracers and showed them it wasn't my end. I don't know what the prob was, but it was fixed 2 wks later. I do know they had to dig to find it.

....Initially, it was all my fault,.....

Yeah all the cable companies assume this, along with the fact that all of us that buy music online are thieves, because we will share it with all our friends, if it were not for wonderful copy protection.

After all the hamburger helpers on the cable companies end is always right.  Of course, I don't know what I am talking about since I only have 25+ years of computer experience and A+ certification in networking.

.....Am I bitter about their lack of good customer service, just a little.

This is why I assume my second from top tier service is throttled at 500kBs up.... they assume we are all running torrent servers, rather than wanting to upload that 10MB picture to walmart, or ajax our website.

Andrew

ps: actually looks like my tier is now middle of the road, Extreme (one up from me) is now Extreme, Extreme plus, and Ultimate.  Ultimate is 50Mbs down, but still only 2Mbs up...all for only $150 per month.

... assume this, along with the fact that all of us that buy music online are thieves, because we will share it with all our friends, if it were not for wonderful copy protection.

Oh yes for sure.  They get in good with local and state governments and are then set.  How many folks have two local cable tv suppliers, you won't find many if any at all.

Very true. What once was Road Runner in my area is now Comcast. They bought them out about 3-4 years ago (approx) and that was a nightmare with the change over.

I first got cable Internet here in the late 90's... was originally @home.com, then changed to @attbi.com, then comcast.net, now rr.com. ](*,) Thank goodness Verizon has just installed fiber in our alley. We should be on FiOS in a couple of months. \:D/

Update: Comcast came out and replaced the cable modem with a Motorola SB5100 and after 30 minutes of it being online the problem came back...right after the tech left.  :? Anyway, a crazy thought came to my head. There are three houses that connect to the same junction box on our pole in the neighborhood. My neighbor, who also has Comcast, performed a Speedtest.net scan for me just so I could make a comparision of the numbers. Well the scan completed with download averages right around what I was getting. This seemed pretty normal. Well, the upload speed didn't even make a tick on the meter! As a matter of fact it failed completely and never could perform the test. Not only did we try Speedtest.net but we attempted other speed test sites just to rule out the possiblilty that their website may be having a technical problem. All failed. What does this tell me? Umm, do you think it's pretty clear their is a line issue and they need to address it? The local supervisor I spoke to today told me to call him if the problem resurfaced. So I put in a message in for him to call me back and should hear something back in the AM. Hopefully tomorrow they will have an answer and fix this never ending problem.   If not soon then Embarq may be getting a call.......

:-(  Ask the supervisor if they use an addressable tap.  That might be your problem, especially if others are sharing that tap.
Lightning and stray voltages are not friendly to our electronics, either.

What irritates me about ComSpastic, is the fact that when you do try call the number for the local office (worked in years past), it now forwards you to their 1-800 center.  Most of the time I have gotten better service just driving into town, and talking with them there.  Assuming if you are lucky enough to get a girl at the front counter who cares enough to help you out.

Ditto on the drive to town for me. That was how I got the info I posted earlier in the thread about my similar problems. There's one gal there, who usually works the pay windows, that's really on the ball. When I go in to pay the bill, she always knows what's going on and if she doesn't she'll get involved with my problem quickly. The only thing she can't control are the ERS checks that tend to reset me now & then.

I would KILL to have Comcast up here where I am!  I was on Comcast for 8 years when I lived in Seattle and the service was fantastic.  Only two 24 hour outages in all that time and that was after MAJOR wind storms.

Now I am stuck with Northland Cable and they SUCK!  Not only are our speeds lame compared to the industry standard now, but our bandwidth takes a nightly DUMP right during prime time.  It also is constantly going out.  Usually about 2-3 times per month!  Not just for an hour or two, but for 8-12 hours!

The worst part is that they are charging us MORE than what I paid for Comcast!

So... Things could be a heck of a lot worse than having Comcast!  ;)
