FTP
« on: July 20, 2022, 06:01:45 PM »
Does anyone know of a good auto ftp service? I have Fling. It was working good until I switched my ISP. After that, it won't let me delete or overwrite files. My ISP service says there is nothing they can do about it. My hosting service says there's nothing they can do about it either. I tried a different hosting service but it doesn't work either. I live out in the sticks and the only high speed internet I can get is through a cell tower service. I had AT&T which worked fine but it was only a 4G device which is being phased out. I'm now on T-mobile which is 5G. It has awesome speed but I can't update my website.

I use a meteobridge for my updates. It doesn't work anymore either. The author can't seem to fix it either.

Help!

Seems like T-Mobile 5G blocks a bunch of stuff.  I'd try a VPN connection and then tunnel out from there.

Then sounds like it's a Fling issue?

Filezilla work fine. Fling and meteobridge don't

clarifying question: can you be a little more specific on what does not work in Meteobridge?  This may help us figure out a networkable way around the restrictions of T-Mobile.

  • Are there specific meteobridge events you have for your website that are failing?  If so, can you give us the details of your service settings(ports, and results of the test options?)
  • if not meteobridge events failing, what is actually failing?  License activation?
  • after reading several threads on network devices not working after switching to T-Mobile 5G, has anyone had you look at the mtu settings? https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobileisp/comments/mb6kr9/easy_app_to_find_the_right_mtu_value_for_tmobile/

are you just having a DNS issue?
I'd take a look at the meteobridge's System->Information tab and see what is there for DNS.  I'm guessing you are DHCP from the t-mobile router, and it is using itself or a T-mobile DNS server

Yeah, find out which DNS server it is pointing you toward. I ran into an issue with WU that is described here:

https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=43631.0

I had to hardcode a different DNS server to get around it.

If you do switch DNS servers, I've had good luck using Cloudflare's free one.  They don't sell your DNS data.

https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/dns/what-is-1.1.1.1/

They also have a set of DNS servers that block known malware sites.   Those are 1.1.1.2, and 1.0.0.2
https://1.1.1.1/family/

Or you can block from sites you may not want your family to go to with 1.1.1.3, 1.0.0.3

Cloudflare is what I use but that's what caused the problem for the meteobridge (don't know if that's the same problem steviebaby59 is seeing). Here's what I get from my Mac terminal window:

Code: [Select]

Answer is too long for UDP encoding. Hopefully meteobridge code will be updated to use TCP in this case.

Here's what my system page looks like. I don't have an information tab. I'm using an older version of meteobridge. Would it help if I upgrade?

Well GREAT! I bought an upgrade key. Now I can't get my meteobridge to take it. It won't connect to their servers.

The screenshot shows you are using google dns.  I can use 8.8.8.8 on my box and resolve the names that you cannot.

If I were in your shoes, I would want to see if it was a true dns issue across the network:
on a networked machine: ping those servers you cannot resolve on the meteobridge
Code: [Select]
ping rtupdate.wunderground.com
Code: [Select]
ping data.awekas.at
Code: [Select]
ping www.empw.netif they resolve, then we most likely have some other network misconfiguration(mtu size mismatch, some restriction in the router, ipv6).

Edit: reading a ton about dns issues(especially with google dns), dual-stack issues, and other network maladies with T-Mobile.
I think you may want to see if Verizon 5G works in your area with all that trouble.

insofar as updating your MR3020 to the latest, if you really want to do that before figuring out the network issue:
Quote
When you need to flash a new Meteobridge firmware to your TL-MR3020, TL-MR3040, TL-WR703N or DIR-505, you can do that by calling the URL "http://ip-of-your-meteobridge/cgi-bin/fwupdate.cgi". This will shutdown some running services and will bring you to the openwrt SW stack below Meteobridge application software stack.

If your device cannot load Meteobridge application stack from the Internet for some reason, you can also directly access openwrt web interface by browsing to "http://ip-of-your-meteobridge-device/cgi-bin/luci".
Login with your Meteobridge password and go to "System" tab. Select sub tab "Backup / Flash Firmware" and use offered "Flash new firmware" section.
Unmark "keep settings" option and start flashing. Keep device connected to power, it will restart automatically. If you have a WL-330N3G, this always needs to be flashed with the TFTP environment as in setup section for that device explained.

I do have my DNS set for 8.8.8.8

I've been reading reviews about Verizon 5G Home Internet. Not good.

set it to T-Mobile's dns servers.  edit: T-mobile is blocking 8.8.8.8 DNS T-Mobile has network issues with non-t-mobile dns servers.

I'll try some different DNS numbers tomorrow. Getting a bit tired tonight. Willing to try anything. Will let you know the outcome. If this fixes it why couldn't T-mobile tell me. I realized when you talk to those representatives you a lot of times get an idiot

I used 8.8.8.8 for many years but there was always something strange, I have also come to totally mistrust Google, way too manipulative. All my systems for quite some time now simply use the IP of the Gateway as the DNS setting and appears to be a way healthier network, no crap, reduced usage, FTP works fine, just don't have any issues

I changed my DNS to the Gateway IP early this morning. Meteobridge doesn't seem quite so sluggish but still having FTP upload issues. I noticed my update key finally took. Maybe I'm starting to make progress. Will work more on it later.

Here's a screenshot of what I'm getting now. I have contacted my hosting service and asked them if they could give me a new IP address and connect me to a different server. They did this for me one other time and it solved my problem.

https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist%3awww.empw.net&run=toolpage

www.empw.net is on a couple disallow lists.  You may want to deal with that or get a new IP from your host.  I'm not saying that's why T-MOBILE is not resolving the name, but it could be.

As a 'dirty and quick' fix you could use a second ( relay ) hosting server if you have one ( if you don't have you can register for one of those free hosting services ):
- configure your meteobridge to send your data to this 'relay server'
then you have two options:
a) configure your 'main site software' to retrieve the data from the 'relay server'
b) create a cron job that copy the data from 'relay server' to 'main server'

If this works, as Daali suggests, you could have problems with your main site being blacklisted/filtered by your ISP, and changing ip address/hosting provider should resolve... well till next blacklisting ; - )
