While looking at Google rain gauge images, I ran across this:
from http://www.mse-bg.com/old/Project%20Rain2%20en.html
Apparently a Bulgarian tipping bucket with claimed 0.1 mm or 0.004" resolution.
The sensor`s MS&E PIV-4 contact device is optoelectronic, which allows achieving a resolution of 0.1 mm. The presence of a heater under the receiving surface and the electronic thermostat control enable measurement of solid precipitation - snow and hail.
