meteoalarm.eu moving to new website and format
« on: February 11, 2021, 04:12:20 AM »
Since 2008 multiple script-authors used HTML scraping to get the weather-warnings from meteoalarm.eu as allowed by "Project Manager EMMA"
I myself support the current format as a "Leuven-script" already for years.

At March 1, 2021 according to the UK-Metoffice there will be a new site, already in live-test at http://www.meteoalarm.org/

That site will display the weather-alarms in a new format, scraping will be impossible.
There is no other complete source of weather-alarms for Europe.
Most (certainly not all)  "meteoalarm"-countries have a xml feed. But the feeds are inconsistent.
F.i. the UK switched  this year to another xml-feed which is working in my PWS_Dashboard.
But I hope there will be some "All of Europe" solution available.
Even the windy.com website has now empty European (UK) areas on their warning layer.
https://www.windy.com/-Weather-warnings-capAlerts?capAlerts,50.876,4.703,5

Are there more ideas how to get the weather-alarms for the EU?

I've been looking at the news and did find that they're offering RSS and ATOM feeds via https://feeds.meteoalarm.org/ so I'm looking to modify the get-METEOALARM-warning.php script to use the feed instead of scraping HTML.  One other change in the feeds is they're no longer posting a 'Green' (all's well) entry.. just the absence of an alert is indicative of 'Green'.  They call these feeds 'legacy', but they're associated with the Meteoalarm V2.0 release.

Their new https://meteoalarm.org/ site looks pretty, but is glacially slow in loading due to one XML fetch for the JSON of all active warnings (Bleah!).  I've not found a way to subset the request to a single country, but will continue looking at that option too.

The  https://feeds.meteoalarm.org/  is "legacy"  as it does not include the countries which never had a  RSS feed in the "old" version.

F.i. In the European one Belgium was never included.  The Belgium one is empty.
Even if there are warnings level yellow or higher.
There is also a different content for the UK between MeteoAlarm and UK-Metoffice.

But I will check more carefully the next days.

Hi Wim,
The data for UK and Belgium are both in the (massively large and slow to fetch) JSON data that drives the new meteoalarm.org site.

https://hub.meteoalarm.org/api/v1/stream-buffers/all-warnings/warnings?startDate=2021-02-11T16:02:00.000Z&endDate=2021-02-12T07:59:59.999Z&language=en&include_geocodes=0  it's a 10MByte file.  Whew.. No wonder the meteoalarm.org site takes so long to load.  I really don't want to use that file unless it can be subseted by country for a smaller query.

@Ken ...

Presumably the file is so humongous because it is providing over-detailed  geo co-ords for the map poly in-fills ???

What happens if you change that last flag to say ...

&include_geocodes=1

Seems a bit back to front but you never know ...
Imagine what you will KNOW tomorrow !

@Betel  using include_geocodes=1 expands the file by another 3MBytes by adding the geo coords for polygons for in-fills.

Ah well, that's what happens when the beteljuice can't go to a (now closed down) local hostelry for some liquid anaesthetic

Had a quick look-see at the mark-up of the file - is it just my British sense of humour ?

  I see @betel's dry humor is undiminished with time.  =D>

Methinks it's not an adjective before the event descriptor, but rather a one-word 'alert level' with the remainder for the event descriptor.
Sure, it could be denoting the conditions after a widespread herd of incontinent cattle in the area, but I'm going with the 'alert level' (Yellow, Orange, Red) for now.

As long as the alerts don't say " Dont eat Yellow Snow" I think we are good.  the Met Office seems to word its warnings and maps with some humour anyway.

Hi,
maybe you are aware of this, but to be sure here it is.
meteoalarm.eu update on 2021-04-07 :
Quote
February 2021, New EUMETNET Meteoalam 2.0 system (updated on April 7th, 2021)
We are very pleased to announce the first release of the new EUMETNET Meteoalarm 2.0 system. The current release of Meteoalarm 2.0 is still a test version, but now open to the public and to (re-) users of the information. Most of the Meteoalarm partners sent already warnings operationally to the new system, almost all information should be available in mid-February. The currently operational Meteoalarm system remains the official source of the warning information of EUMETNET Meteoalarm until further notice. No responsibility is therefore taken for the correctness and completeness of the information available in Meteoalarm 2.0.

The schedule for the full release of Meteoalarm 2.0 (meteoalarm.org) as of April 7th is:
Test phase for Re-Users till end of April 2021
Retirement of Meteoalarm 1.0 (meteoalarm.eu) visualization (mid of May 2021)
Retirement of Meteoalarm 1.0 (meteoalarm.eu) feeds and alert hub (end of May 2021)

Link to the new Meteoalarm 2.0 web page: https://meteoalarm.org
The release notes including more detailed information for re-users can be downloaded here

May 2021 is new target date

any updates on this as  https://www.meteoalarm.eu is still alive as of 20:35 BST 2nd July which surprising as it was supposed to be turned off end of May been waiting to turn off the advisory link until an alterative script become available for Saratoga template

I noticed some countries stopped reporting to the old site ( .eu ), but other countries never started reporting to the new site ( .org ).
Another thing ( that makes me wonder ) is that the reporting ( for the same country ) are sometimes different between the two sites.

Hello hcorrin,

I have two solutions which will work for your location: -

1. AerisWeather alerts API which is carrying data from the new Meteoalarm

or

2. UK MetOffice XML feed

Of the the two solutions, my personal preference is MetOffice for UK based coverage as the alerts appear to be more explicit and are posted earlier.

As there is currently a warning in force you can see both solutions working on the template that I maintain at https://claydonsweather.org.uk

Just click on the Alerts and AA links under the forecast module to see the popup.

I see you are a Saratoga template user, I am very happy to share my solution with Ken True (or any other template maintainers for that matter) as a potential suitable replacement for the old method.

Ian

i see meteoalarm.eu is no longer working and i have not seen an update for the meteoalarm scripts to us meteoalarm.org so the advisory link in the menu has been commented out on my  Saratoga templates https://www.hc-iom.co.uk/WD-AJAX/index.php and https://www.hc-iom.co.uk/WD-AJAX1/index.php (alternate dashboard) but check-fetch-times still tries to access the meteoalarm.eu site so takes a long time

If I am correct in assuming that the Isle of Man alerts are covered by the MetOffice, you can use their RSS feed.

I guess that meteoalarm has finally boxed me into a corner.. I'll be reworking the get-meteoalarm-warning.php script for the Saratoga template.   I'd been delaying it as their switch-over to the new site hadn't gone well, and some areas still didn't have alert data (like the UK).

Yes if you set up a contributor account it is free. You just have to share your own weather data with PWS which is part of AerisWeather. To me that is a good deal as it is mutually beneficial to both parties.
