new firmware version for GW2000: V2.2.4
« on: May 31, 2023, 05:06:29 AM »
Hi!

There's a new firmware version V2.2.4 available for the GW2000.
Use the current WSView Plus app or the web interface of the GW2000 ("Device Setting") to update.

Changelog for V2.2.4:
1. Fix some bugs in ip Settings and add DNS server Settings.
2. Optimize wireless RF parameters
3. Optimization of air pressure data error problem.

add:
just installed - no visible changes; custom server sending unchanged, everything ok so far

No.1  & 2 look interesting as that is exactly the area I was having issues with. I'll install it later.

Well I just tried to update and it said it did it OK but now I cannot get into it via my desktop but it pings out OK on the old wifi IP but not the fixed LAN IP. The phone app does not seem to support the correct way of changing the LAN IP, nothing shows up to do that, which was also the case prior to my attempt to update the F/W. Next thing to try is a power cycle. If that fails then its a full reset.

Really not good enough.

Well it is finally back up and running but I have no idea what happened to do this. I though I'd done a full reset but that didn't happen as all my settings are still there. The gateways own SSID still shows up despite the setting to disable it. It also still thinks it needs to update the F/W despite when I login it says it is already installed! This is both on the app and the web interface. I'll try one more reboot to see if anything settles down. OK the gateway SSID has now gone away but it still thinks it needs a reboot! Even my own script shows as V2.2.4 being installed. Something is very wrong here.

Hi!

I can confirm that despite the update (and display of the installed v2.2.4), the availability of the v2.2.4 update is always displayed in the web interface.
I can apparently update the firmware as often as I want - the v2.2.4 is always reported as "new".

There's obviously a bug in checking the firmware in this firmware.

Hi!

In the meantime, v2.2.4 is no longer shown to me as a newly installable firmware. Until a few hours ago, v2.2.4 was displayed as new, although exactly this version was already installed on the GW2000.
Apparently Ecowitt was able to fix this problem on the update server.

Hi!

Ecowitt has now confirmed the update problem (v2.2.4 is always reported as new despite the installation of v2.2.4) and also reported its solving.
In fact, it was a problem with the update server.

I have 2 GW2000's.
The first gw updated work perfectly.

The second gw2000 running on the indoor wh32 T/H/P updated with error.
During the update the percentage counter cycled from %0 to %160 3 or 4 times and ended in failed update.
I logged out and back in to the GW2000 and all seems fine so far with V2.2.4

Leaves me wondering if the snipped T/H/P cord had something to do with the issue of updating this gw?.?.

if the firmware does some sort of test run with the connected sensors during (or at the end) of the upgrade, this is possible as the GW2000 has to switch into the WH2650/WH2682 mode when the inbuilt T/H sensor is not found.

Interesting, I've not seen any difference with mine but I'm using a lan connection with WiFi turned off. Could that be why?

I don't think so - I think that when @giusGB speaks of RF, he means the sensor side (433/868/915/920 MHz) and not the (W)LAN side

I realise he meant the sensor reception and mine have been stable after updating, however depending on how the circuit is designed I just wondered if using WiFi could affect sensor reception as my WiFi is disabled.

Is it possible to downgrade the GW2000 to an older firmware version? I upgraded mine from 2.1.3 to 2.2.4 and quickly realized it was a mistake.

The GW2000 is connected to both ethernet and wifi. Wifi was necessary because version 2.1.3 didn't have a wifi on/off setting, so connecting it to another AP was the only way to stop it from broadcasting its own AP.

With firmware version 2.2.4, when the GW2000 is connected to both ethernet and wifi, it stops responding to ethernet requests after 20-30 minutes since the last reboot. It seems to drop all incoming packets, because it has no trouble sending UDP broadcasts over ethernet to port 59387 every 2 seconds and multiple ARP requests for the default gateway IP in short bursts about every 30 seconds (even though it receives ARP replies every time, it just ignores them). Any HTTP requests via ethernet are ignored, ICMP as well. Sensor data cannot be read either (port 45000). Over wifi, sensor data can still be read from port 45000, but the HTTP server is very slow to respond and frequently times out when serving axjs.js (which is the largest resource on the page, about 13 kB uncompressed).

With wifi turned off it works for a little longer, maybe 50 minutes. Then it stops responding to requests over ethernet again. The only way to reboot it at this point is to power cycle it. This could indicate a memory leak in the firmware: it runs for a longer time when wifi is off, presumably because there's more memory available and it takes a bit more time to fill it up.

Version 2.1.3 was working fine. I upgraded because I was trying to get rid of the UDP broadcasts on port 59387. Lesson learned.
If anyone knows a way to downgrade these things to an older version, please let me know. Thanks.

As to downleveling I don't believe you can do this. Several here have found it stable (including me after some initial issues). I only use the ethernet connection and have no problems. I wonder if you have an issue with your DHCP server or router causing the dropout?

@atakama I suggest you contact ecowitt support. They were very helpful when I had issues with HP 2551 firmware. Ultimately in my case the root cause was faulty hardware, but they provided testing versions very rapidly. Of course the gw2000 is a bit different as it can’t be updated via memory card.

I traced the issue to a possible memory leak in the NTP client on the GW2000.
On my network, I configured the router to redirect all NTP requests to a local server, so that clients can still get NTP information even if the internet connection is down. This local server was sending NTP replies with stratum = 0 (unspecified). After reboot, the GW2000 would continuously send multiple NTP requests, in quick succession, if the stratum field in the reply is zero. I suspect this is also consuming all available memory.
As soon as I reconfigured my NTP server to send a non-zero stratum, the GW2000 returned to normal operation.
I also shared my findings with Ecowitt support.

Excellent job on finding the cause. This also is a good reminder for all of us, that some software/firmware bugs can be triggered by ”rather innocent” things (like redirecting ntp queries), that you definitely would not expect to cause any problems.
