LM live map question
« on: July 10, 2014, 09:30:56 AM »
I only noticed this yesterday on the realtime page of LM.org and that was only after my brother asked me about it.

When the stations feature is turned on, most strikes show a blue streak heading from station to strike.  But once in awhile, there is a green streak.  From what I saw yesterday, it seems like only short distance strokes were green.  But I was only seeing that from one station yesterday.

So is the color based on distance, E field vs H field, or something else?

If you hover over the "Stations On/Off" you will see the explanation that they are based on distance.

Hover over doesn't work when you have a tablet usually.  I figured an explanation was on the site somewhere.

Thanks.

... it would be neat if hover and a few other things were made functional on the tablets.

Hi All,

Just my observation.

On very rare occasions, I get a green line.  So it might not a distance issue for that color.

When I log in and see the details for a station and look at the contributing stations for a particular strike. They are usually the green line stations.

Again just my observation on that part of data info.

Hi Again,

Here is a couple of examples that happened this morning from my station.

Don' know if this might be the reasons for the green/blue line issue.

It's also possible Egon et. al are working on changes to the maps.

LightningMaps... blue>500m ,, unless Tobi's changed it.
Blitzortung.org... blue= stations used to locate - up to 12 stations. Now Egon's working on that, and it may be changing.

Hi All,

Looks like something else has been added to the map display.

Purple dots appear on the Real-Time Lightning Map when a station records a strike.

Yep - that was along the lines of a suggestion Mike made in the BO forum.

And on another note - nearly 15,000 strokes/hr peak for me today--a new record.  While I've been getting better at riding my gain/threshold settings during active periods AND we have quite a line of thunderstorms that's formed in the Ohio valley, I'm guessing Egon et. al have also been working some algorithm magic.  It looks like some other stations might have hit highs today, too?
