Help Please - WS80 Power / Heater
« on: December 30, 2021, 09:36:51 AM »
For Christmas I got a Ecowitt ws80 ultrasonic anemometer.

I also have the Ecowitt 12W Power supply which is a AED Power Supply Model AED12.......(Ecowitt extension leads are un-available at the moment.)

To connect the WS80 lead to the power supply I am missing a 2 pin male connector with a screw collar. The lead supplied from Ecowitt is bare wire at one end.

I am sure the connector is some sort of standard component but I am unsure what type / size I need.

If anyone could advise I would be grateful........

Cordially & Compliments of the season.......

There are several posts/threads in the forum relating to this topic:
entering "ws80" and "heater" into the search field will give quite a few results
e.g. https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40977.msg422617#msg422617
And there are more - have a look ;)
The plug type is known as GX 12.

The PSU is out of stock for a long time now as are the cables which is frustrating, I have mine to mount and I believe that the 12v also runs the sensor? (leaving the Lithium for emergencies only)

I am tempted to cut the connector off my sensor (but if I have any warranty issues could be a replacement) but I found some old 12v garden lights in the junk box the other day that look very close in connector type so I need to see if its a fit.

I think they are Aviation plug/sockets - you can get plastic or metal ones.

So just to confirm the connection to the power supply unit is NOT a GX 12 connection. The male 2 pin connection needs to be bigger than a GX 12.

What does work is an outdoor light plug and play lead. Part # 33789 made by "Green Lighting" and supplied by Toolstation here in UK.

Thanks for sharing, that's a great find - just a shame its discontinued and mostly out of stock at toolstation everywhere!

The manufacturer website also is out of stock:
https://greenlighting.co.uk/product/extension-cables/

I did mention above I found a lighting product that looked the same, but as my WS80 was already up the pole I had not had a chance to check it.

You were 100% Correct.........just a post script.......the thread on the power supply unit differs to the thread on the extension lead.......silicone / heat wrap by way of a work-around.........

I got the last two in UK ( Toolstation Lincoln )

Does the thread match on the WS80 end? I don't have the Ecowitt supply so will likely use another supply that is compatible.

I found some stock at another store about 15 miles away so that could be worth a weekend bike ride to stretch my legs and collect...

No it does not.........good luck......let me know how you get on...........when you collect make sure the female connection has both white liners...you will see from  my photo that one of the small nylon liners is missing.

I'm a bit confused referring to your photos - you are trying to plug the socket part of the plug/socket together - you dont seem to have unscrewed the plug connection?
Also there are different sizes of aviation socket, the specifications are always quoted on the ebay offers - I think the next on up is a 18 and the plastic ones are also different - you need to read the specs in the description on ebay.

Many thanks for that. To avoid confusion you may wish to read my initial post, the issue is that I am unable to connect to Power Unit. Power unit is two pin and although previous correspondents suggest a GX12 as a solution that is not the case. The solution was to purchase a garden light extension lead which fits, and I am now able to connect everything up.I am sure a MX fitting would suffice and am aware that a variety of sizes are available from a number of retailers. To date no one has advised what size fits into Power supply.

Even though it's an old(er) thread - what may help in identifying the connector to the Ecowitt provided power supply (and a description of the socket there): https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40977.msg450478#msg450478
