Suitabe Alaska Weather Stations
« on: August 15, 2020, 06:05:58 PM »
I have moved to the Kenai Peninsula from California after having an operational weather station there for several years and an am considering installing a another weather station. Because of the long Winter days a solar powered unit will not work. With the winter snow build up a  regular anemometer may also not work. It should be powered preferably by low voltage and heated. Any Thoughts?

Not sure how cold it'll get at your new location, but know if you don't already that all of the PWS that don't cost an arm and leg will only report temperature down to -40, except for Rainwise, -55C/-67F. An old member here from Alaska use to love to shove that fact down our throat every chance he got even though 99.9% of us will never experience it.

I remember him what was his name? I know John was his actual name. But your right he used to say his station would bottom out so he never knew how cold it got.
I just remembered. His name was Scalphunter.

Yes, that's him. He actually had a Davis then moved on to a RW just for that fact. That's how we became "aware"...

The Davis wireless should operate through the winter with battery but rain gauge wouldn't be accurate without a heater and that would require power.

Enjoy,

Paul

Most likely - 20/-30 lowest. Usually -40. I am not sure that a wireless with batteries would last through the winter. Given battery temperature and 3 months of night.
