Brief Temperature Drop This Morning

(1/1)

RoryG:
We're experiencing a spell of cold and very windy weather just now, up here in Shetland. My Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus recorded a temperature drop of 4ºC (6ºC to 2ºC) then recovered within the hour back to 5ºC. This coincided with a rise in pressure from 992.6hPa to 993.6hPa then back down to 992.2hPa as the temperature rose. I looked at a few local stations on WU which showed the same event, and our flux tower out on the hills went from 4.6ºC to 1.2ºC to 3.1ºC in the same period.

Any ideas what would cause an event such as this? Possibly a frontal system, however the rapid recovery of the temperature within the hour is very specific.

Cheers,

Rory

Without knowing anything about the topography of the area or anything in general it's hard to say. But that's what's cool about having a station. You can see anomalies like that in weather graphs.

RoryG:
Yes, it’s great playing with the data, my old weather station only uploaded to WU so I had to pull the data from there. The anomaly has been solved by adding the rain plot, there was very heavy rain at the same time:

We have a similar event going on just now!

On cold nights here with a dead calm wind you can see a rise in temperature when the wind picks up. Then when the wind dies down again the temperature will begin to fall again. Only a Weather geek could enjoy something like that. :-)
