think its already been a couple years since browsers introduced warnings so beware next step will be browser not loading un secure content note the word content which can be a multiple of things. as unfortunately some hosts charged for the facility however dont forget your websites need to be checked for not loading scraping data that is scraped from unofficial non secure methods..

i get it is a pain in the ass but if you have a website that is used by visitors then they deserve the trust factor and a painless experience of using your website no one likes those annoying nag screens and most of all the website owner should focus on this aspect .. 2020 will see a big push in terms of security and how browsers handle it..  i spend a couple hours a month reading various reports from web developer conferences, browser development conferences most popular browsers companies if you want call them that are talking to each other ..

most negativity to this is mostly around the costs , at the end of the day you have a wide choice of hosting companies that offer this free within there packages either way there is some short term inconvenience caused by changing hosts but once that short period is over then you can happily carry on as if nothing has changed..

i first ranted about this in 2017 i got a lot skeptics responding but my wife gets annoyed at my always thinking what if scenarios most of them based on later scenarios not now.. better late than never is not always the way to go...

As I self host, I moved over to Let's Encrypt quite a while ago. The automatic renewal works a treat - no action required, though I did have to add a restart of the web server into the renewal job to get it to pick up the renewed cert.

If you buy the Google one, I would think they'll be doing the main work and installing it on your site.  But I have no first hand knowledge of that.  Worst case, the cert you buy will be good for what ever years you pay for.   You may have to go through those steps to install it.  But it can be good for years worth.  At that point, it's more a matter of what you are willing to pay.

I'm assuming "Google" here is in reference to the GoDaddy cert question. Can confirm they do the install and no other action is required after. I bought a 2-year cert from them last year for a WordPress site. They did the install and I have not had to do anything since.

Wish I had seen a post like this thread first. Would have been far cheaper. The install looks straight forward as described above.
