25' Pole from Roof?
« on: September 20, 2021, 03:49:33 PM »
Apologies if this isn't the correct subthread/site for this question

Hi,

I live in a suburban neighborhood filled with trees. A few 50-60 ft trees surround my house. I want to mount my WS-2000 such that it is above these obstructions, because there is no place on my property that would be far enough away to not be impacted by the trees. I think I need about 25' to get above the trees from my rooftop. Is that possible/practical? If so, what material should I use for the mast, and would I need to guy the mast? Would it be better to simply put a very long pole in the ground next to my house?

Thanks for your input.

David

I don't think it would be practical. You need to change batteries and clean the rain gauge periodically. You might want to consider a model that has a separate anemometer that you can mount on the high pole, then keep the other sensors on a lower pole that has easier access.

My self-invented rule of thumb is that guy wires are needed if you are going up more than 20 feet...or 15 feet in areas that regularly see 35+ MPH winds.

I don't know the rule of thumb for ROHN 25G tower sections, but that would set you back a whole lot more than the weather station hardware.....

For what size/type of pole?

Thanks. Me thinks that would definitely need guy wires :-)  Looks like they're stackable?

Wires aren't an option for me so I'm debating a 10ga telescoping flag pole vs a 20' bit of T6 pipe or tube (https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=42578.0).
