Questions before buying a weather station for the first time

(1/1)

Vuvuzela:
I am planning to buy a personal weather station in the near future, but I have some questions before buying it...

How long do weather stations last (could properly maintained one last for at least 5-7 years?)

Any opinions on bresser's weather stations. Are they any good?

Can they survive strong wind gusts (100 km/h+)?

What are the most common problems that usually happen after few years of usage (damaged parts? sensor failure?)?

NorCal_Dan:
Well built and maintained stations should last many years.  Davis VP2 stations are well built, but it's not uncommon to have to replace humidity or temp sensors and other components of the system.  Weather is destructive so having a well built and mounted station is imperative to longevity.  The accuracy of the data being collected should be reflected in the amount of money spent on the station and mounting solution.

If you have any desires to upload your weather data to either a website you own or one of the sites like Weather  Underground, Weathercloud, PWSWeather etc, I suggest that before you make a purchase that you understand if and how a given weather station can perform that upload.   Don't just assume that all weather stations can upload to any system -- that may result in serious disappointment.

And if the manufacturer says an additional device is needed to perform an upload, make sure you find out the cost and availability of the device, and whatever ongoing fees you will have to pay.

You don't want to find yourself in a situation where a  necessary gateway is no longer available for sale, or the ongoing cloud fees are a surprise.
