WU reports success but no data on site
« on: December 03, 2008, 08:38:12 PM »
I have what looks like a Weather Underground (WU) problem with my new system, not a Weather Link (WL) problem like I originally thought.

I have been running the WU plug-in to WL for almost a year on my Vista system without any problems.  Now I’m standing up a small XP system dedicated to the weather station.  I have just finished a clean install of XP Pro SP3 and nothing else but Weather Link, its WU module and the Silicon Labs drivers that make the USB logger look like it’s coming in on a serial line.

There is no anti-virus software and only the Windows Firewall enabled.  I have put an exception into the firewall for the WL .exe, but I don’t think that’s the issue.

The Davis VP2 and WL are communicating just fine.  Access to the network is just fine.  When I open the WU plug-in and click “test” (I have verified that my station name and password are correct) I get a success – but nothing appears on the WU page for my station.  If I start up rapid fire, it reports success – but again nothing appears on the WU page.

So here’s the data point that makes me think this is a WU problem and not WL:  If I change the password for my weather station to something incorrect, clicking “test” on the WU plug-in fails – which of course is a good thing, but...

So it appears that the WU “handshake” is happening; my station name and password are verified and accepted and WU is returning success, but there’s no data appearing on the site.

Though I don’t think it’s the problem, the symptom is as if WU won’t accept data from a machine different than the one that it received the original data from.

Any thoughts?

Roak

Ps.  Please note that I still have WU being updated form my old Vista system until I solve this problem, so clicking on the link below and seeing data does not mean that it's fixed!  Seeing the OS in my signature change to "XP Pro SP3" from "Vista Premium" means I have it fixed! :)

Your Longitude and Latitude settings in WL on the new computer are an exact match to the old one correct?

Yes, in fact it appears that information is stored in the VP2 console, because the correct settings came up when I initially ran WL on the new machine (if memory serves).

So I'm to the point that I've installed WireShark on both machines and have captured the HTTP packets that have gone to and from Weather Underground.  They are different, most notably the packet being sent from the machine that doesn’t update rapid fire is much longer than the one that works (the longer part is in red).  But even the body of the messages are a little different, like there's windgustmph, windgustmph_10m and windgustdir_10m in the packet that works, and that's not in the packet that doesn't.  And the packet that doesn't work has leaf wetness and other fields that I don't even have sensors for!  Why the differences, I don’t know!  Both machines have WeatherLink 5.8.0 installed and the weather underground DLL (I'm not sure if the DLL is the same version, it deosn't report version number anywhere that I can find).  I’m way out of my element here, I know enough to get WireShark up and running and capturing packets, but that’s about the extent of it.  Does anyone see any issues here that are obvious?

For a reminder, no anti-virus software is on the machine that deosn't work, only windows firewall.

So here’s the Vista machine that works:

..But even the body of the messages are a little different, like there's windgustmph, windgustmph_10m and windgustdir_10m in the packet that works, and that's not in the packet that doesn't.  And the packet that doesn't work has leaf wetness and other fields that I don't even have sensors for!....

In WL Station Configuration, you do have it set for the correct station and none of the additional sensors checked?

Sorry to keep asking the basic type questions.  I just have a feeling this might be one of those "can't see the forest for all the trees" type of issues that we all run into from time to time.   ;)

Finally, an update...

I don't mind you asking, for whatever reason it's become a side job of mine to troubleshoot other developer's problems at my work (HP) -- I don't know how many times I've handled "It stopped working this morning"-type problems, with the first question from me being "what did you change this morning?" with the always-predictable response of "Nothing", to which (for example) my next question is "So how long have you been running this weird firewall that you're not supposed to be running on this system?" to which the answer is typically "Oh, I installed that this morning..." :(

Yhea, didn't change anything, right.  So I understand you asking! :)

Ok, so I have the second-worst possible news on this problem – it now works and I don’t know why.

I haven’t had a chance to reply because I reworked my entire office, moved machines around, moved where systems are on the network (I have a wired network in the house) and just about tore my whole PC and network infrastructure apart and put it back together (I had wanted to get the weather PC up and running before this project so I wouldn’t be off the air during it, but three or more weeks of the reporting problem put the kibosh on that goal).  During the project I put the weather PC on the shelf until I was finished.

Finally got around to hooking the weather PC back up in its new home in the living room at which point it worked!  I hate when broken things start to work and you don’t know why, because they’ll almost always bite you at a later date… :(

I did five things between when it wasn’t working and now: I renamed the weather PC, I installed AVG free anti-virus and Windows Defender, moved where the PC was physically connected to the network and took the batteries out of the Davis VP2 console for about a week or two – I didn’t change any of my WL 5.8.0 settings or nuttn.  So my only theory is that there may have been a name conflict (same computer name in the same workgroup, which is why I renamed the machine) which caused the problems, but that’s a pretty weird problem to have from a name conflict.  Other than that, there isn’t anything that I did that I would have any effect on WU reporting, at least in my opinion...

So anyways, I’m up and running and reporting, and ready to start on a web page.  I thank you all for the help, I wish I could solidly point to one issue and say that was the problem, but unfortunately I can’t.

I do note that there is already a min-ITX thread established – this is exactly what my weather PC is based upon, so I’ll be doing some replying in there – my entire weather station PC is the same size as an external optical drive!

Maybe see some of you in the other thread!  Again, thanks.

Ps.  We had record-breaking cold temps and winds during the time I was off the air and I don’t even have a log :(

Glad to hear that it is working!  Hopefully you really fixed it without trying and it will stay that way.
