Intermittent loss of data connection from Davis VP2
« on: February 19, 2025, 02:30:56 PM »
The following was posted on the WD discourse forum but so far, I've had no responses to my post. So, here it is again on the WXForum.

Not sure exactly what the category should be so this may need to be moved elsewhere more appropriate…

I am having an intermittent issue (about every three days or so) with WD intermittently losing connection with my Davis VP2 Pro. The battery was recently replaced in the VP2 as has the super-cap with no change in symptoms. On the WD screen, I see RED for both the Data Quality and Data Received indicators.

Additionally, I notice in the system tray on my windows laptop that there may be two or more of the Real time Clientraw FTP, ver 10.2 processes running with both of them and showing counters incrementing. The contents of each also shows successful uploading of the clientraw.tx and customclientraw.txt files. Reviewing each of those processes shows no errors.

Unfortunately, if I don’t check the status of WD on a regular basis, I can miss when the stoppage occurs and I lose live data until I restart the entire process. I am using StartWatch, VirtualVP and VP Live and they seem to run just fine.

I wish there was some way I could get a text message to my phone whenever this problem happens so I can minimize the data loss.

Any thoughts or suggestions as what else I should check would be appreciated.

BTW, I’m running WD ver 10.37S-(b152).

Thanks for the link. Since neither WD nor the Real time Clientraw processes actually hang or shut down, I'm not sure a Cronjob could detect an issue. However, I'll take a look and see if it can help.

Since WD itself somehow detects bad data and data received, there may be something within WD itself that could be used to set an alarm trigger that could send a text or email when a data-loss issue is detected.

How are you connected laptop to VP2?

Sorry for the delay in responding but, I came down with some kind of bug last Monday and haven't been able to anything until today...

My connection to the VP2 console is via the Davis data collection plug-in to the USB connector (via a serial to usb converter) on my laptop. It has run flawlessly for many years.

I was not aware of the WD switch setting to run WDWatch.exe. Whatever it does seems to have fixed my problem. Will continue to monitor the data uploads to make certain this actually resolved my issue.

Thanks for the post and suggestion. That's what I have always loved about this forum - members sharing their knowledge... \:D/
