Itron Openway smart meter in 900MHz band
« on: August 26, 2015, 10:46:50 AM »
Consumers Energy installed a new Smart meter yesterday. It is an Itron Openway C2S0DS Model ITR24. (Tuesday 8/25) I don't know if the utility is operating it in the "bubble-up" mode, or it needs to be queried.

So far my Davis VP2 wireless transmissions seem OK. Good packets are still at 97% this morning on my ISS. There doesn't seem to be any ill effects of the new meter with the Davis.

This discussion On the Wireless Side and my ongoing attempts to get data from a remote ISS has piqued my interest in 900MHz doo-dads in general. I also have gotten into SmartThings. My house is a veritable beehive of 900MHz activity now...

Has anyone had any luck viewing their meter output with any of the available tools. I was thinking of getting one of these if it will work with my meter. Can any of the homebrew Davis sniffers also read the Itron Openway meters?

I use a Rainforest Automation box (about $40 USD)  https://www.itron.com/na/partners/Pages/RainforestAutomation.aspx  Pretty cool things - remote acccess via PF or Bidgely.com and accessible data downloads via USB connection.

Did you have to register it with the utility? I saw some info online where you need to register these devices with the utility in order for them to work.

Got a special deal through my utility co (BC Hydro) and all I had to do was plug it in.  Each one has a unique GUID (plus the usual MAC address).  The GUID seems ot control its acccess.  What is cool (and a bit spooky) is that when I look at it via Bidgely, I get a local weather overlay so I assume that the GUID is linked to my local residential address and the weather is from the closest weather station.  Cool though...
