To get power to the camera you need to have one of the following.

  • a PoE switch at the other end of the Ethernet cable. This could be just a PoE switch or an NVR with built-in PoE switch ports
  • a PoE injector adapter with a power brick. This goes between your router or non-PoE switch and the Camera
  • just a power brick and an AC outlet near the camera location. But ONLY if the camera has a separate power connection.
The camera does have a separate wire for a 12v supply to plug into.

Why not just get a simple webcam like  a D-Link instead of mucking with POE, IPs etc.?

Make a DHCP IP address reservation at your router.

Because doing so will prevent the IP address from ever changing. That way you'll always be able to find the camera on the local network.  Also later on if you decide on accessing the camera remotely it will be important that the IP address doesn't change, otherwise it breaks the port forwarding.

Can you get me started on how to make a DHCP address?

You need to re-read this thread from the beginning. All that advice has already been given.

You go into your router and look for the place to make a DHCP IP address reservation. In there you specify the MAC address for your camera and choose an IP address for the camera to always have. The router will then always issue the camera that address to use and it will not give that address to any other device that wants to join the network.

It is showing up right here as it's own ip address.

Yep ..but that is not a reservation. That is just a IP address lease table.

You find the place in the router that deals with this. Can't tell you with any more details because you are using an ISP modem as a router. They are all different and they are not very good. Which is why I recommended using a proper router and turning the ISP device into just a modem. It is very possible that the ISP modem/router does not have a place to make a DHCP reservation as it may not offer this feature. Even if the ISP router has this feature there is much much more to be gained from your own router rather than using the ISP device as a router. The ISP device should just act as a modem and nothing else that then connects to your router to have a better experience in many many ways.

On an Asus router which I recommended it looks like this:

- You go to LAN menu and then DHCP Server tab.
- Then you scroll down to the section that deals with DHCP reservations and it looks like this:

- After entering in the MAC address (or selecting from the list) and specifying the IP address to associate to a MAC address you'll see the DHCP reservation table. Here is my partial table for DHCP IP address reservations that I've entered. I've obfuscated the MAC addresses.

My ISP router does have DHCP feature. Here is my camera in the reservation. I think I have it now.

No, not the same thing.
The DHCP service and DHCP reservations are two different things.
DHCP reservations is an added functionality to basic DHCP service.

Just because you see DHCP related stuff does not mean you have DHCP reservations.

Perhaps you do have it. But I can't really read your attachment.

That looks like it!  can you confirm that the MAC address matches the one on the camera?  All of mine have the MAC address on the sticker.

Then all is good.  You can put 192.168.1.64 into your browser and connect to the camera.  The fun begins!
