GW1100 New device Coming!
« on: June 10, 2021, 03:50:28 AM »
Some more breaking news from Ecowitt and Fine Offset!
The engineering teams have been well busy lately!
They are developing the next generation of the GW1000 at present. The stand out change for this version is that it will also feature a web interface to allow for configuration of the settings/Wifi etc
Whether any of the other wished for changes will make it such as sd card backup options for local data storage are not yet being revealed. (at least to me!)

Web interface is interesting - how do you connect to the network to get the web interface, WiFi Direct I suppose?

For me the biggie will be adding the logger capability - along with an API to access it. Please please please in JSON format not binary!

Just my luck again  When I purchased my VP1 within a few months the VP2 came out, now having got my GW1003 system they are about to replace the GW1000 with something better! Be good if they offer a discount to people who recently purchased the old one but some how I doubt it.

The GW1000 is a very low cost part of your overall system.
The price to upgrade a new model is likely to be around ~$50 USD or less. So given that, I would not get overly upset and as stated at time it is not overly clear just how much of an evolution the new model will bring. Also this is early news and it may well be many many months before it is released to the public!!

The GW1000 is based on ESP8266 an MCU that is very common among arduino community. You can find many examples about web interfaces on this device.
ESP8266 can be configured as an Access Point, so you connect to it and then usually there is a captive portal so everithing you write as URL you will go to the web server, otherwise IP 192.168.4.1 is used.

Maybe they will shift to ESP32? It is similar to ESP8266 but has more pins, two cores and is able to drive a little webcam the ESP32-CAM. IT has also bluetooth but not at tha same time of WiFi.

No it's just that I feel I jinx it when buying something new and it soon gets replaced  ;)

Yeah you don't have 4 GW1000s :), I don't see myself upgrading as an early adopter :)

The web interface will be handy for me. I have two remote sites that I can visit the raspberry pi with VNC. That means that I will be able to check and adjust the device and update the firmware without having to travel to the site.
(I have six GW1000s already)

Cloud is OK but it only works if you have 100% connectivity plus so much is hacked these days you need to spread the risk which in turn expands the hacking risk. The only zero risk is no connectivity   ;)

I'd bet that this will be it.

No idea - but
you may want to look into the FOSHKplugin from olicat
https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=39625.0
this little tool allows to send (distribute, forward) data to up to 50 (afaik) different parties from one single GW1000 (or other Ecowitt [clone] console).
And it can do many more things.
Of course it needs to run on some server, e.g. a Raspberry Pi or a NAS server.

I think what would be nice is if it provided a web interface for local viewing of data on your own network, as opposed to just configuration. I know I got to stop daydreaming

WiFi is a silly way to connect a server to the network. No serious IT guy does this. WiFi is for portable devices and convenience sake, not servers. For power outages, I have to have to have my wireless access point on a battery backup rather than just my router and modem in order to keep my weather station going.

Not going to argue the points made, as I agree with them and consider myself to be a serious IT guy. But in this case, as the unit measures indoor temp/humidity/pressure , location of placement is important. Few residential abodes have ethernet jacks all over the place (if any), but they do have power outlets, so WIFI makes sense.  It is unfortunate that the unit itself does not have a rudimentary backup for small power outages, but, for the price and feature list, I don't complain too much.

What's your experience with orders from them?

I have one that was placed on 12/07/21 which is still listing as Unshipped.
So it's now had that status for 12 days.
