HP2564
« on: March 20, 2023, 05:59:45 PM »
Hello all, I am trying to update the firmware on the display console to 1.8.7 (it is currently on 1.8.1). I have a SanDisk 32GB micro SDHC USH-I card and it is formatted to FAT32. I unzipped the user.bin and copied it over as instructed, however when I insert the card into the console nothing happens except a green memory card icon with a yellow exclamation point beside shows along the top. I tried rebooting the console and had the same result.

As a test, I took an empty card of the same kind and inserted it and saw the same icon/exclamation point. I tried to backup data to the card, but the result was a progress bar that never progressed.

My thinking at this point is it is the wrong type of card, but as far as I can tell it fits the criteria I can find. Does anyone have a recommendation for a brand/model of SD card I should try? Alternatively, is there something I am doing wrong that causing this issue? Any help is appreciated.

user.bin is in the root of the card, not in some subfolder?

The exclamation mark is interesting.

Can you take a picture of the console with the yellow ! ?
I’m not sure this is documented.

Is the SD card lock off?

I can't see a physical lock on the card (I haven't used an SD card in ages so I'm definitely behind the times). For what it's worth, I was able to copy user.bin to the card. As a test I tried deleting it as well, so I assume it must be off.

I’m going to assume there is something it doesn’t like about the card or its format.  Let’s see if anyone else has an idea.

I’m also assuming you reformatted it as fat32 and not exfat.

I’m not sure this is documented.

Is the SD card lock off?
microSDs have no lock, only the big ones.

in theory you seem to have done everything right ... - but

an "!" before the SD card icon means that the SD card needs attention - something is wrong with it (from the POV of the console) ...
green means SD card in, red means no SD

has the SD card been inserted properly ? Did it click, snap in ?
when looking at the console display and the SD card port at the right side:
the shiny card contacts have to show towards you, the card label away from you ....

can you post a photo of the SD card label ? - you already did  #-o

EDIT/ADDENDUM:
The "!" indicates that the console has difficulties to properly access the SD card. => either something wrong with the card or it's not properly inserted.

Therefore, format the microSD again - make a FULL format, not a quick format, make sure it's FAT32 and not just FAT
copy user.bin again to the card - and another text file - see if you can open and read the text file from your computer (the text file won't obstruct the upgrade - the console is looking for a file name user.bin or factory.bin - it's for testing purpose only)

if nothing works, try another SDHC microSD - the one you use may not be fully working for a sensitive card reader

Yeah I'm wondering if these are new SDHC cards that are really SDXC in disguise now.  Who knows.  But the fact that he couldn't backup data to the card and the progress bar never moved sort of implies there is something wrong with it.  Obviously.   I couldn't find mention of the ! (let alone the green/red card) in any of the manuals, and the release notes really don't talk about the !.

@shredder what OS are you using to format this?

I also reached out to Ecowitt support and they said "The icon tells that the SD card is not working on this console." They also asked if I had a smaller sized SD card to try.

I don't, but I have ordered a 16 gb one, making sure it is not "Ultra" or "Extreme". I will report back when it arrives.

One other thing to take into account, is the prevalence of fake SD cards.

here is one reference
https://sdcardexpress.co.uk/blogs/news/sandisk-ultra-microsd-card-how-to-recognise-genuine-card

I have had both fake SD cards and thumb drives (that internally used a fake SD card)

I'm not saying this is your issue , just something else to think about.

I think the lower capacity etc. that on what you plan to do is a good idea

another reference on fake cards

https://thecounterfeitreport.com/product/186/microSDHC-%28microSD%29-Memory-Cards.html

Take into account as the counterfeiters learn that their product can be recognized as fake, well they change it to appear to meet whatever is needed on appearance to have it appear fine.

I finally received my 16gb SD card. Tried it and get the same result (yellow icon beside SD card icon). I tried reformatting (FAT32 and non quick format) and no change. I checked the links about legitimate cards (thank you Rover1822) and the one I received certainty seems to be legit. I have reached out to Ecowitt support again, and hopefully will get some resolution.

Absent that, is there a specific SD card anyone would recommend that they know works?

Thank you again for all of the assistance with this!

I just entered a local electrical supplies shop and picked the smallest and slowest card available. It happened to be a (marked on the card; package thrown away): Sony 16 GB micro SD HC I 90MB/s SR16UY3. Plopped it in without formatting myself and have never had any problems with the console writing the data files or with my transferring of firmware files. Still, 16 GB is grossly oversize for the tiny data files. I would have chosen 1 GB if available - would have sufficed for both my own and the consoles remaining life time - with a huge chunk of free space left... Edit: Should point out that my console is the older HP2550 version (and a clone at that marked as PROTECH WSMIHP2550).

did it ever work before with a microSD card (e.g. for saving the console data) ?

Would you share the steps you use to format this and on what OS?  I’m curious if there is some OS issue or that new console really doesn’t like cards.
