WH51 soil mosture calibration
« on: February 13, 2023, 08:45:35 PM »
Any tips for calibrating the WH51 soil moisture sensor ?
I’m using 60 for my 0% and 310 for my 100% values with custom being set to ON
This seems to Ok for my soil type in the garden

What are other people using ?

I'm using 140 and 230, my soil never goes beyond those ( quite limited ) limits

P.S.
Couple of old threads on wh51 I bookmarked:

I don't calibrate these. Each year, I stick them into a bucket filled with homogenously mixed dirt/water, check their readings, move them , repeat, so when I know they are all reading near the same, I use their values. I have 12. My purpose is to measure soil moisture in very large pots that I grown vegetables in.

I only got one sensor it was set on default and was running between 25% and 45 %
just trying to get the settings running a bit more realistic

For inorganic granular mixes of high porosity (comprised of granite grit, turface, pumice, scoria, etc.), I am using 110/200 and 110/160 depending on the ratios. This is for growing a large number of succulent plants as well as containerized trees.

For my garden, I'm using different settings which I don't remember exactly the calibration. Sensor is packed for the winter, but I calibrated from fully saturated to quite dry/a bit past the drought stress point.

Overall, it's the trend of the data that's most useful to determine when to water.

I agree

I am more concerned about relative values as long as all are reporting within reasonable variance. They are invaluable to me, as I grow very thirsty plants in very large pots. Over the years, they have stopped me from overwatering , and identifying low water conditions.

Growing in pots, to start with, with tomatoes, peppers etc.. , is challenging upon itself as each pot is its own environment, I have a micro watering system that I adjust based on the knowledge gained from the sensors
