I was hoping someone could tell me what the status of Webcams on Weather Underground is? Did they kill the entire thing? I see that Wunderground no longer has their webcam listings at https://www.wunderground.com/webcams. Nor do they show my webcam on my personal weather page.
I've searched the forum and couldn't find anything concerning this.
-
my web cam still shows up and is current on my WU page
(I use the method where to provide a url to my web cam image)
-
Thanks for taking the time to reply!
I have been using the php-cam-image-upload.php script for countless years. When I run it now, it says successful, but no webcam image shows up at Wunderground.
-
My webcam is also gone. I've used the URL method to display a patio weather view for many years, but suddenly a few months ago it lost contact and was replaced by a tiny pixelated static image from my street view camera. All attempts to restore this webcam have been unsuccessful.
The URL works, https://www.gwwilkins.org/HikVisionWU.jpg, but WU always shows it as 'Offline'. It's a ~44Kb 640x480 image. Maybe they decided it's too big, but at least they could provide some guidance so we can meet their new standards, whatever they are...
-
It is definitely not too big. The size requirement limit is 150 kb. I would suggest changing the image filename to image.jpg
-
Thanks, galfert, but no joy. The camera is still 'Offline' even with this image:
https://www.gwwilkins.org/image.jpg!
-
Well I wouldn't expect it to work so soon. Give it a few hours.
One other thing people have done is delete the camera device from your WU account and create new instance. This works sometimes.

OK, thanks for the help. I did delete the device when editing the old one, #5, didn't work, and I'm now up to webcam #6 having deleted the previous 4 as well.

It is a hit and miss...
My camera came back after I got the new Logitech uploading image.jpg a few days ago and using the URL method https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IONTARIO226 (https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IONTARIO226)
My Bloomsky using FTP however is not showing the videos (indicates offline in settings) https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IONTARIO1189 (https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IONTARIO1189)
Checking earlier historical dates, it is a hit and miss! https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/webcam/PaulMy/1/2019-5-12 (https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/webcam/PaulMy/1/2019-5-12)
Enjoy,
Paul

Again I messed around with this for quite awhile today.
It will not work using Weather Display: Control Panel --> Weather Undergroud --> Setup webcam upload.
It will not work with the URL method at https://www.wunderground.com/member/devices.
It will not work with the php-cam-image-upload.php script I have used for countless years.
I also deleted and recreated new webcam accounts. I made one new account for FTP and one account for URL upload. I could not get the php-cam-image-upload.php script to work at first (wrong name and or password), until I tried the "Upload Key" as the password in php-cam-image-upload.php. Then the FTP said: "uploaded success ... disconnected .... good bye", however I still did not get a new image or ANY image on Wunderground.
This is definitely Wunderground's fault! That's one way to cut down on your bandwidth, just don't allow it. =D>
I also note that they replaced the webcam image calendar with a funky daily search tool for showing just one image at a time.
Perhaps IBM is doing more cannibalizing of Wunderground? They've already done wonders. I think someone like Ken might contact them and find out what is going on with their webcam service and why they will no longer accept any of the methods used for uploading webcam images to them. ](*,)

I'm about to take the plunge on this myself, and other than the possibility it won't work at all, I'm curious if anyone has this working using a Ubiquiti UniFi G3 Flex?
So far I've figured out how to get an "anonymous" 1920x1080 still from the camera using a URL request.
Things I think I still need to do:
Resize and rename the image for compatibility with Weather Underground via Windows batch file and task scheduler
Setup an FTP server and update the camera image on a schedule compatible with WU
If anyone has something similar setup, I'd appreciate any tips on getting this going...
-
Hi all,
I lost my URL based image too.
I tried to setup a new camera, but no go.
My old camera was still shown as "On-Line" with the green dot, but the image was just not there.
The new camera stays "Off-Line" showing a red dot, but the URL-based image is there...

Although weird, my guess it is one of the Wunders of IBM....

My cams no longer showed up, so I deleted and re-added and now none of them work. WU doesn't care. I do a live stream to YouTube now and don't worry about WU. They obviously don't care.
It's dark outside so nothing to see but little flashing lights right now. This is a 50 mile view of the north Georgia mountains that goes from almost north to southeast (camera obviously doesn't cover the whole range).

I deleted the delete my webcam and create it again to try to get it to work, it didn't, so I decided to open up another ticket, right before saving, it brought up this bulliten:
Webcam hosting service is discontinued effective October 21, 2021
Weather Underground will discontinue the webcam hosting service effective October 21, 2021 in order to better focus on the core products that make Weather Underground one of the best destinations for weather enthusiasts. Webcam data will be deleted from our servers on or after this date.

We have spent significant time and energy to update our forecasts and Personal Weather Station (PWS) Network over the past several years. When we looked at taking a similar path forward for the webcams, it became clear that an upgrade to modern technologies would be incompatible with many of the cameras currently using our platform. We decided that the investment required to start the network over from scratch would not be viable. Our efforts will instead focus on the performance, stability, and vitality of our core offerings. Please rest assured that the PWS Network remains a core piece of Weather Underground.
Thank you for your support.
-
Hmmmpf. Since I found another solution for Rapid Fire I don't see much point in loading to there then.
-
Cracks me up. How much modern technology do you need to process an FTP .jpg image? Funny how they kill one of the best features this site ever had.
-
This is the inevitable result when MBA’s wrangle control of technology companies. IBM no longer understands or respects its origins.
-
By and large i suspect the ones who are likely to set up a web cam are ones who are more into the technical aspect and actually have the best sited stations.
If they push them away the data quality will go down.
Talk about discharging a firearm into your phalanges.
-
Well here you go, no more webcams . . . Disappointed, but no surprise, they didn't support them anyway

Move them over to MESO West or Ecowitt.
-
Thanks for the info! I'll check out both MESO West and Ecowitt

Move them over to MESO West or Ecowitt.
Does MESO West host webcams?
-
My mistake MESO does not have weathercam hosting. Web cams can be added to Windy.
Windy: Webcams - Kenai: Webcam de - USA (https://www.windy.com/-Webcams/United-States/Alaska/Kenai/Webcam-de-USA/webcams/1605270763?60.542,-152.869,8)

oh wow , the death knell is nigh for WU web cams (that are still working)
-
would WU come after anyone if they used the maps and did not send the data
-
Finally! I’m almost happy it’s over. WU has been so stupid about the whole webcam thing. It was a great feature that we all loved. How did they make it so difficult? It’s just posting an image. Says a lot about the crew behind the scenes.
-

Don't follow what you mean ?

Sorry, I thought I was adding to the string about WU dropping webcams. Here is the post they put out the other day. ](*,)

What are these 'core products'?
Seems to me there is little difference between them and other PWS supporting websites
In fact Windy to my eyes is significantly better, definitely more stable

if you have a webcam on your own server then surely they can have it where they have a link to that image
but I guess then they have no control and you could have a link to something that is not in the guidelines etc?
