Forum Needs Help
« on: December 05, 2010, 04:36:43 PM »
I have been working on weather forum for sometime, but I havent gotten much traffic. Hoping that maybe putting it on this site will help...

I have updated and put somemore topics on the forum.

If you would like to have your own tab on my forum, just give me a hollar; tell me here, on the forum, or on the blog; I need anyone to check it out for its survival #-o

Thanks to everyone who checks it out 8-)... Here's the link:

Thanks again!

My preference is to limit myself to a single great location on each topic that hold interest for me.  This is my weather forum.  I ahve otehr places devoted to photography, iPhone, rural living & tractors.  Just my $.02

Farmtalk, We already have one to many Weather forums for us with Personal Weather Stations.  I prefer just one myself; however it seems that some folks don't like http://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index.php as it's mostly dedicated to "Weather Display".  I like most use more that just WD, and actually have Weather Link, VWS, VPlive and all SoftWX products so this forum is also needed ](*,)

Farmtalk, maybe my comment will help you in a future project.  My experience with websites is to be successful they need, in addition to a sharp focus, both excellent content and an external reason for people to go there.  "Build it and they will come" only works in the movies.  It looks like you did a good job in constructing the forums, but I looked at it and the first question in my mind was how will anyone know they should go there.  Its a puzzle, and frequently not well solved.

Hey farmtalk,

I think you are an excellent contributor on THIS forum.  You start a lot of good ones.  It's hard to believe you are as young as you say.  I envisioned a Red Green lookalike in a John Deere hat behind the mic at WFTK - FarmTalk AM1610 or something like that.

Thanks for the compliment! I do have a straw hat that I wear in the summertime when I work in the garden, mow the grass, etc. I understand that there are too many forums about weather around here, and I should focus on one forum....

Thanks everyone for commenting! :-) :-)

A friend told me one way to success is to look at what everyone is not doing (service, product, etc) and if it can be done....do it ! Maybe you need to look at what the weather forums are not providing and make that a focus of your forum.

Or possibly look at providing what others are providing, however concentrate on your local region only.  There are tons of weather discussion boards out there, but this is what we've done at Gulf Coast Weather.  We still talk about weather in general, but primarily discuss our local weather only across the northern gulf coast.  The link is in my sig if you want to look.

That too is a great idea! Im think that I am going to make a forum with different stuff and stuff that is normal, but it will be for the Mid-Atlantic States.

Thanks everyone for the help! 8-)

One thing you need to do in any forum is spread things out a bit, instead of just having forum as the category and having it like you do you need things split up like one section called forum discussion, personal sites, help, etc. Now I am not going to say anything about whether or not the forum is going to get visitors just a little tip on how to design a forum a little better. It is possible with phpbb, i've used it and one thing you need to be careful of is permissions, it's a trickey thing to get right and often you will need a few fake accounts to test it on.

They say the truth hurts, but in this case, it dosen't hurt that bad. I know that I won't be able to get an audience anything near that of this forum, but it's still cool to make something and say it is yours 8-)

Farmtalk,

We need to give you credit for "trying"  =D>

How many times have any of us thought about doing something and then just sat back did nothing and thus, missing out on a good opportunity for something? You can't learn by doing nothing. Farmtalk took that initiative and tried something new for himself. That is great and should be applauded and encouraged regardless of the outcome. The good old school of hard-knocks has more impact on oneself than anything else.

So, my recommendation to Farmtalk is to just keep trying things out. Don't let anything (or anyone) stop you from being creative.

BTW, Farmtalk, you must have a name. I would suggest putting it in your profile signature area so we can talk a little more personally. That's just a personal pet peeve of mine - folks hiding behind a fake name.
