Power consumption Froggit DP1500 / Ecowitt GW1100
« on: June 16, 2025, 05:18:07 PM »
Hello,
I want to install this to a remote location and use solar power supply (not Ecowitt).
What is the expected current consumption? I’d like to calculate if it is realistic to use the setup in winter (less sun energy).
Thanks!

I have done the same thing for my WN90LP runs solely on !2 Vdc 12AH battery with a voltage dropper and a 10W solar panel .
Run fine on this setup I had no problem and we are coming into Winter here in NZ

the power consumption is around 3-5 Wh.
Putting a properly dimensioned powerbank/battery between the solar panel and the GW1100 should do the job.
You'll have to think of reserves for a few days with little solar exposure - and have to cover the nights.
That will define the capacity of the powerbank/powerstation and the wattage of your solar panel.

Could you please give a bit more detail about this setup? What battery are you using that allows for charging-discharging simultaneously?
Also (this might be off-topic, sorry), how do you connect the gateway to the network, via WiFi?

a) there are powerbanks which have this feature - you should of course only use such ones in this context
b) a car battery or a so-called Powerstation would be a simple example  ;)
c) @Rocketman has a special setup which is not comparable to a usual Ecowitt weather station installation - also, the WN90LP is not a LAN or WiFi device - he depicts its data on a non-Ecowitt console with some DIY setup and a WiFi signal extender for the RS485 communication which is used there

have you looked into the WS6210 option (see also our WiKi --> my signature) which is very much made for remote locations ?
admittedly more expensive than a GW1100

Thanks Gyvate.

Yes, I am familiar with the Ecowitt range. I am just picking potential ideas to avoid having to go with the WS6210 which is pricey indeed and takes all the fun out of a DIY setup  :-P

Gyvate is correct . My WN90LP is all powered via battery and solar panel , I have a Hongyuv HY-Display console which polls at very high speed rate ( 2 seconds updates ) I also run a Greatcontrol isolated hub running 2 masters which I have one master connected to the HY Display console and another connected to a laptop running Weather Display and Cumulus MX .
