HP2550 console backup power supply
« on: January 22, 2023, 05:47:11 PM »
Just wondering what are people doing for backup power supply for the HP2550 console .
I was thinking using a 12 to 5 volt convertor ( running on a GEL battery and charging via charger etc... )

Just wondering what are people doing for backup power supply for the HP2550 console .
At home, I have a solar battery system and the weather station is on the circuit that is supported by the solar system when the power fails. Not 100% cover, since the battery can go flat overnight during winter, If the battery goes flat and the power fails, I can plug an old generator from my houseboat into the house and power the circuit that the solar system supports during a failure.

Realistically though, I have to be awake to know the power has failed and complete outages have generally gone by the time it takes me to start the generator, plug it in and change over the emergency switch in mains box. I only bother doing all this on hot days when I want to run the air-conditioner.

I have another one on my houseboat which has a solar/generator/town power charging system for the domestic battery. I have one of those cheap 12V to 5V 4-USB outlet DC-DC converters under the driving console to power the HP2550 console. Not really a backup, since the 12V supply is the primary supply which is always on when the boat is being used.

That was what I was thinking with a backup GEL battery ( you can change out the battery as needed )
your houseboat has a weather station what model ( how to you get around N pole changing etc...)

The weather station is another HP2550. At present North is just set as the bow. I'm more interested in the direction of the wind relative to the boat rather than the geographic origin.

However, having said that, I've got a Raspberry Pi Zero that is connected to a GPS which can give the speed of the houseboat and its course and I'm working on a 9DOF sensor that can be used to determine  compass bearing as well. From that you can use that the speed, course and boat bearing to correct the apparent wind speed and direction measured on the boat to the actual readings. Unfortunately some of that stuff in on my houseboat and the Murray River is currently in flood and I can't get to, and stay on my boat easily (see linked video). It is expected to be March before the river subsides enough to get into the marina and use the boat again. The last time the river was this high was in about 1931.

You might find this thread from Aug. 2021 interesting. It discusses using a power bank as a backup for an Ambient Weather WS-2000 console.

A rechargeable usb power bank works great.

I have a 20000mah one which is great, I haven’t tested and worked out how long the power bank would last for but would need to know the current draw of the console.

Hi!

With display on about 500mA and without about 200mA.
At least I measured these values here on an HP2551C.

I just use a regular, sealed lead acid battery UPS, I know not lithium, but still cheaper for capacity, and I have multiple "small" items plugged into it.
