WS 5000 info display size
« on: January 09, 2023, 02:32:42 PM »
I realize I'm likely wasting my keystrokes here, but I was surprised the search for any complaints regarding screen display size showed zero hits.  I have switched units from an old Ambient Falcon unit which stopped functioning, to the WS 5000.  The dimensions of the screen are smaller, which is just fine.  But the actual readings are smaller than what I was used to in the older model.  I'm surprised there is no option to "simplify" or hide some of the less necessary info elements, making the temp and wind speed and direction larger.  Seems the screen is capable of that kind of setting, but of course, this would require a design firmware change that offers the option.   I guess I'm the only one who would want that option?  It's too bad, because I love the unit, and all the information offered, but for regular daily fly by use, less info, larger info, would be more appreciated.  There... rant done.

Not a silly question. But it is what it is, and frankly better than most IMHO.

But, you also have the option of using a webpage, or other app on a tablet , etc. There are a bunch of 3rd party options now for that that can read receive the data from your unit.

Ambient:
  WS-2000

Thank you Rover1822-  Appreciate your info.  I know and use the Ambient Weather page, and see my station info, but it takes a lot of clicks to navigate to my station.  Could you please share the name of the apps or sites that receive data from my display?

You could also pickup a 1900 display or used 2902/1900 from eBay.  but again, that might not have the information you personally want displayed.

Also, ambientweather.net can send data to PWS, Weather Underground, etc.  I send my data to PWS and then use the "PWS Monitor" app on my phone to check my home location and other weather stations.

As Rover1822 mentioned, there are other more technical ways to also snag the data and display them on tablets or other devices, but they typically are bit more involved.
Ambient Consoles: WS-2000, WS-1900, WS-1200, WS-2902C, WS-3000-X3, WS-0900-IP(observerIP), WS-1001-WIFI
Ambient Arrays: WH65B
Ambient Sensors: WH31E(3), WH31B(2), WH32B, WH31SM(2), WH31PGW, AQIN, WH31LA(3)
Ambient Spares: WH24B(2), WH25B.
Ecowitt: HP2551BU, GW1000B(dead), GW1100B(2), GW2000B
Ecowitt Sensors: WH51, WN34BL, WN34(2), WH31, WH41, WH40

Thank you kheller2- Appreciate the tip on “PWS Monitor”.  Loaded it on the iPad, and it works well, reporting my station.  Just wondering if there's anything out there that updates without needing to swipe down for updates.  I’m guessing this would require some sort of web mirroring that would take the api of the display.  Just don’t know how to do that.

PWS Monitor has a 3 minute auto refresh option in settings.
There is the Wunderground app as well as some android apps.   Others can chime in on them.

Hi Mark184,
I completely agree, it's my problem too, that's why I'll never buy such a console, the presence of microscopic information that requires glasses, and the essential data too small anyway.
It would be very nice if Fineoffset-Ecowitt gave the possibility, on their TFT display, to enlarge the font or to choose only the information that suits you (something similar to the new very expensive Davis console).
And that's why I ordered a WN1980 console as a replacement. LCD and with missing solar data, but hopefully better readable.
