Yes, I could try to make either of the WS90s be closer to The Wh40 and the manual, the point is , even the WS90s don't agree. So using someone else's calibrations, as are posted all over the place, might be pointless. I'm not interested in making the WS90s work at this point, just rely on my WH40s. (This was just an experiment :)  )

Also this was just one event, will see what happens next time

OK, Another rain event. The new WS90 and the WH40 are closer. The older WS90 (Kickstarter), is still off in LA-LA land.
There are no calibrations in effect for any of the sensors

So the total daily totals are

0.43"    Manual stratus
0.46"    WH40 with extension
0.60"    Old WS90 (LA-LA)
0.46"    New WS90

Until 2:24, it does look promising that the WH40 and new WH90 are fairly close.  However, and maybe I'm not understanding the graph, but was there rain after 2:24 on January 9?  If so, it looks like the WH40 and original WS90 did not measure it while the new WH90 did.  I find that more puzzling.

I believe there was Heavy fog / Dew at that time, I am attributing the New WS90 continued increase in rain totals to that, am I correct in that assumption?  No idea. What strikes me is that this time it was closer to the WH40, if you look at my previous graph in this thread, that wasn't the case. I have made no changes.

I'm trying to collect data , to maybe , calibrate the WS90s, right now, I can't . I have all of this in spreadsheets, looking at rain rates etc. I also use my own custom server to receive the data, so the formatting , and time points are on point.

But , I have only done this twice now, as I recently received the newer WS90

I still don't get the point of testing/comparing your equipment in uncontrolled environment. For fun? Sure, have fun :) but that's about it.

Indoors, same temperature, a reliable fake rain system that can dump exactly the same amount of water in exact time over exact same area.... now you got a system to compare and tune your equipment.

Fun fact - when you take your freshly calibrated and now squeaky clean toys outdoors, place them at different locations and heights, you will get slightly different results and none of the are "wrong".

Cheers!
Have fun!

Any updates on this ?

I've had a few other rains , same trend. My kickstarter one reads way high, when compared to my new WS90, both being located within 2 feet of each other and same height. The new one is much closer in rain readings to the manual stratus and the WH40s. I will be getting more rain today.

Yesterday's rain readings from a heavy event . This will be the last time I post the data. Really no point as the variances are so large and inconsistent when compared to the previous ones . Bottom line, I trust the WH40 and the manual rain gauge, the WS90s can't even agree with themselves, which may just a difference in date of manufacture , no idea.

So the total daily totals are

1.02"    Manual stratus
0.98"    WH40 with extension
2.44"    Old WS90 (LA-LA)
1.50"    New WS90

Rover1822 its interesting to see the two units compared with each other and maybe there is a difference in components inside the units with one been a kick starter and the other been a lets say a better finished product for the general market, it would be nice if we knew what if any changes in hardware was made between the kick starter and the newer model.

Myself i only have 1 ws90 and 1 ws65 for the most the are fairly close in there readings for wind, temp, etc etc.....but i have not had any rain yet to compare the two and in all honesty i do not know how accurate the ws65 is in itself.

Thank you for sharing this with us

Martiin.

From experience, and many, many other posts in here the WH65 (osprey) tends to over read. But that can easily be calibrated if you have a quality manual rain gauge like a stratus located as near as possible to the WH65.

Mine needs cleaning right now, so not including results from it :)

Thank you Rover1822, i have a ClimeMET CM1016 manual rain gauge if that is any good..... but how close do i need it to the array and same height?

Thank You

Martin

In my opinion, as close as possible, a few feet, and elevate as close as you can without interfering with each other.

Rover1822, it is possible measure a set amount of water and pour on each sensor in a controlled way ?

No.

Not without a lot of engineering , and complete knowledge of how the sensors read. Neither of which I am going to pursue. These are not like tipping bucket sensors.

But, I encourage others to try, and maybe , maybe, we get some word back from the manufacturer.

Also, Please, please, understand, these are just my experience, they should not be interpreted to be a global statement on the device. Nor should I be considered some testing guru, these are solely my experience. I would be interested in others experiences
