2902c maximum rain rate?
« on: July 04, 2022, 01:59:34 PM »
I'm trying to find the maximum rain rate the 2902c can record.

Searching this subforum I found one related post ( https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=39166.msg414280#msg414280 ) where the person manually tipped the gauge resulting in 60 tips per minute = 14.17 in/hr.

What I'd like to know is what rate can the gauge actually measure? As in, how fast can rain exit the collection funnel to be measured?

My device is running firmware 4.3.3.

Please let me know if I've left out some important bit of info.

Thanks,
allen

The manual of the original piece, the WH65 outdoor array (Y-shape) says:
Rain volume display range 0 – 6000 mm
Rain volume accuracy ± 10%
Rain volume resolution 0.3 mm (for volume < 1,000 mm)
1 mm (for volume ≥ 1,000 mm), or
0.01 in (for volume < 100 in)
1 mm (for volume ≥ 100 in)
the content of the tipping spoon of the WH65 rain gauge corresponds to 0.254 mm rainfall

the post you are referring to is not with a WH65 but with a WH40 rain gauge whose spoon content corresponds to 0.1 mm rainfall.

The highest rain rate I measured with my WH65 rain gauge was 102.7 mm/h
If you want to know the actual maximum, you will have to do tests yourself - and consider the to have a reference array  ;)

I know this doesn't answer your question, but there is a huge difference between what a tipper will count full on non-stop tips, and what it will count accurately. I imagine consensus is tippers start to get dicey with "spill out" in only 3-4" per hour rate. Above that, the discrepancy can be rather large to the point of nullifying the data. This obviously depends on the quality/brand/type of tipper as well.
