I have just sited a WS80 with a GW1100a.

I have read on this forum various postings about the heater & snow and ice. I am a liitle reluctant to wire up, extensions, cables etc over a large distance so as to comission the heater. In Notts, England we don't get many long hard winters, some occasional snow.

1) If I were to site an additional  WH32 would this negate the use of the heater ?
2) Do snow and ice effect wind data readings ? or is it typically temperature ?
3) I see on the excellent Fine Offset hardware grid ( Gyvate )  that the WH32 does overwite temp & humidity data from the WS80, would this be the case using GW1100 ?

Any other observations or advice would be gratefully received.....

A WH32 would indeed trump the WS80 external temp and humidity readings (This is how my setup works)
Remember the GW1100 is just a receiver (apart from the internal sensor), so you can set the receiver to ignore sensors as required.

I have had a WS80 from the very beginning. Mine is a development model and did not have the wiring for the heater pad installed so I cant use that feature anyway. However in the several years I have used it I have yet to see erroneous readings caused by very cold weather. Perhaps I have just been lucky, but then I do live in possibly the warmest part of the mainland UK so winters are pretty mild here.

the effect of low temperatures (below 0°C) is less on the temperature sensor.
It's mainly on the ultrasonic anemometer whose readings can be impacted by ice on the sensors.
Hence the heating.
But using a separate WH32 for an outdoor temperature/humidity sensor makes sense anyway as the location of a WS80 would usually be chosen for optimal wind measurements (which is usually not best for temperature measurements).

I haven't noticed an impact of low temperatures (down to -10°C so far) on any of my outdoor T/H sensors.
When the heater engages there is a small up-and-down in the temperature readings of the WS80.

The sensor hierarchy in the console firmware for GW1000/WH2650/HP2551/GW1100/GW2000 remains the same
outdoor temperature: WH65/WS69 --> WS80     --> [WS90*] --> WH32(-EP) (right trumps left)
                       wind: WH65/WS69 --> WS68     --> WS80      -->[WS90*]     (right trumps left)
                        rain: WH65/WS69 --> [WS90*] --> WH40                            (right trumps left)

[so far only the firmware of the GW1100/GW2000/HP2551 consider the WS90 (WittBoy),
the GW1000/WH2650 firmware update for this is still to come]

Does that imply that the WS40 and WS68 are more accurate than the 80, but the 90 trumps all but the 40?!

"trumps" means that the console prefers the values of this sensor of the same observation type over the others in line (if they are both or more active for that console at the same time). If a WH32 is present, active, but not registered in the console, the precedence won't take place.

It's not necessarily about accuracy. It's also about allowing for a separation of the sensor location as opposed to be all together in one array.

E.g. using the array for wind and rain and a WH32 for temperature, or using the array for wind, the WH40 for rain and a WH32 for temperature, or any such combination ending up with having different locations (2 or 3) instead of only one with an array.
The precedence line is more from complexity to singularity (also including precision e.g. regarding wind).
