Weather Station Console XC0370 internet connection drops
« on: January 09, 2022, 06:58:18 PM »
My Weather Station frequently looses access to the internet (I can't access my Weather Station from the internet via WS View).

I suspect the issue is related to my internet IP address that changes frequently (internet facing IP on router). Once I power cycle the weather station I can access the WS View dashboard from the internet. Until the next time my internet IP address changes.

I am using no-ip to to register a DNS name that fixes the access to my security cameras.

Is there a way to configure the weather station to use my no-ip DNS name?

Not sure what exactly you are doing respectively want to do.
A XC0370 seems to be a WH2910 clone (or also Ambient WS-2902).
With the WS View app you wouldn't usually see anything from this console, you can only access the posting to weather services or to a custom server.
Hence I'm wondering what you are talking about. You may mean the Ecowitt app which accesses the Ecowitt cloud (www.ecowitt.net) where your console can post data to.
Here you do not access your console/weather station but the data it has posted to the cloud.
Maybe that's what you mean by "WS View Dashboard" ?
WS View on the other hand displays only live data from the GW1x00, GW2000, WH2650 (clone) consoles.

Could you enlighten us further that we can understand your context and your issue !?

When my weather station is working correctly, data is posted to wunderground.com/dashboard. I can view the live data on the site and also view the live data on WS View mobile app.

When my internet IP address changes, the live data is not uploaded. To get the weather station live data posted to wunderground.com/dashboard, I have to power cycle my weather station. I presume this process refreshes/renews the IP address link to wunderground.com. The weather station once again correctly reports live data until the next time my internet IP address changes.

I had a similar issue with my home secuity cameras (where I couldn't access the cameras until I updated the new IP address). I fixed this by using no-ip. I can successfully access my cameras using the no-ip DNS address no matter what my internet IP address is. no-ip keeps the dns in sync with my changing internet IP address.

Can I configure my weather station to connect to wunderground.com using dns instead of the IP address?

Ah, you are talking about the Wunderground dashboard in WS View.
As far as I know the posting to WU, WOW, WeatherCloud and Ecowitt.net by the console is done with a FQDN (fully qualified domain name) which needs to be resolved by a DNS server.

Again, you are connecting to the internet - this has nothing to do with your console. You read (via WS View) from e.g. wunderground.com what your console has already posted. There may be a cache issue with the app. Maybe clearing the cache of the app will help. That's rather an internet access issue than a weather station (console) issue.

If your IP changes frequently, your provider will still offer the same DNS servers. There is, however, a possibility that the CDN (content delivery network) servers which WU uses are overloaded and the request for WU gets stuck.
It happens quite often to me with WU that my browser displays an error page and only reloading of the web page shows again my station data.

At your console end nothing can be done here.

If your console connected to WU directly via an IP (what it pretty surely doesn't do), it wouldn't be touched by a DNS server issue. And the change of your internet IP for your router has nothing to do with you reaching another web site. The other way around, reaching your IT infrastructure from outside, i.e. from the internet, could be impacted by a frequently changing IP address, even if you used a dynamic DNS service (I guess that's what you are referring to by this no-ip DNS).

Of course, if the change of your IP happens during a request (requesting a web page, e.g. the WU dashboard in WS View), then the display could be stuck as the response wouldn't find the requester anymore. But even with a dynamic IP DNS this would be the case as the dynamic DNS service needs to learn first that the IP has changed. So some disruption cannot be avoided in such scenarios.

Ok, understood. I'll put up with it for the time being and look into options for automatically rebooting my weather station when the address changes.

Thanks for your comments.

You don't need to reboot your weather station - it won't give anything.
You may rather need to restart the WS View app (not only close it in the Smartphone/tablet but remove it from the RAM [Hamburger symbol left down in Android]).

Rebooting the app (even restarting the mobile) doesn't fix the issue. Neither does it fix the issue with data being loaded to my device at wunderground.com.

The only thing that fixes the issue at this stage is for me to reboot my console.

that may be your workaround, but the issue is with your router ...

What if you use the Ecowitt app (not WS View but the Ecowitt app !) ? Same issues ?
There you can see all your console values and also graphs - just a different layout

Of course you have to activate posting to Ecowitt with WS View and create a free account at ecowitt.net and then register your station with its MAC address (shows in the WS View app and in the Device List of the WS View app).

I've installed and set up the Ecowitt app. I'll see how it goes when my IP changes next time.

Thank you for your guidance..
