Firmware update ultrasonic anemometer WS80 available
« on: September 07, 2021, 01:03:01 AM »
Hi!

There is now a firmware update for the WS80 that fixes various problems (e.g. the occasional peaks of 144kmh):

Quote
WS80 firmware upgrade available
During rain time, sometimes abnormal wind speed was detected due to water accumulation influence to the hardware.
We improved the signal qualification process and have the data filtered more precisely for those untable siganl influence.
The new firmware has been tested in Australia and New Zealand during raining time and heavy wind condition, and after about two weeks testing, there is none error wind data detected. So we believe this version solved this problem in a very good way.

Please download the tool kit and read the instructon carefully. It needs a PC with windows system as the tool for firmware update is with PC version only. No MAC system tools available at the moment.

The firmware update software requires a Windows computer.
Direct link.

Hi!

I don't know, but I would expect that you can recognize this from the version number in the upper right corner after connecting to USB.
The current update reports version 0x0200.

But since you then already have the anemometer on the table you could just install it (over).
I dont think that you see the installed version while it is mounted on the pole.

is there a possibility to read the contents of the dfu file?

You can convert the DFU file to S19, HEX and BIN with DfuFileMgr.exe (available after installation of the install package from Ecowit).
But I did not see any way to read out the version from the WS80 for comparison.

I see that inside there is an STM MCU!

No, you would need the original source code for the firmware.

Unrelated to that, this is exciting to learn that there is a STM32 in the WS80. Lots of space available for features - just 34kb used only! For the step to hit reset to enter bootloader mode, I found that pointed tweezers worked well as the pushbutton is very small.

STM32 MCUs are very difficult to get now and prices have risen by a large amount with the pandemic so I wonder if the chip shortage will impact Ecowitt's prices.

While this is the easiest way to flash firmware, I am also a bit amused that Ecowitt didn't spend the extra effort to develop a fancy branded interface. I use similar tools for flashing my own custom firmware in another hobby so it just caught me by surprise!

Space available depends on STM32 MCU type. There are also chinese clones.

Has anybody or yourself taken apart a WS80 to verify the chip markings?

And yes, the flash memory size depends on the MCU but typically these are 128kb minimum with a small amount set aside for EEPROM. If it's a counterfeit or clone chip, that might be pared down for cost savings.

Hey guys,

I was the tester for the firmware upgrade here in New Zealand.
It took 3-4 variations in firmware to come to this version.

Which has been performing very well, high winds and rain dont seem to affect the sensor any longer and stable wind speed and direction data is being observed.

If any has any questions Im happy to answer.

I have installed this on my WS80 and it runs fine, however I wonder if the solar and UV part of the f/w has been modified? I have had to reduce these values in the calibration section prior to this update and now find I need to remove my adjustments as the values were too low after the update.

Difficult to say.
Best would be to send an email to both Ambient AND Ecowitt (support@ecowitt.com) asking this question (and report the answer back here  8-)).

It must have been modified - now my HP2551 console is updating the solar radiation every 5 seconds (probably 4.75  ;)) what wasn't the case before.
Wind data were updated every 5 seconds before too, but solar data not.
Wondering if this is also the case for the T/H data, but the changes are usually too little to produce visible changes in this interval.

Hi,

I installed the WS80 Upgrade Tool Kit, connected the WS80 with the Windows PC and startet the DfuSe-Prog.

There was no available DFU Device?

What to do?

After installing the  USB driver of STM32 the DfuSE-Prg. works.
No update is necessary.   :-)

Just upgraded successfully. Had a difficult moment as I could not for the life of me get the WS80 in DFU mode upon reset. After a few tries I realised the USB cable I was using was some bespoke rubbish from another gadget that delivers power only not data. When using a normal USB cable it worked fine. Relatively quick and the tool is clear. Now have to see if it addresses my historic spike issues vs WS68.

Hi!

There's a new firmware update V1.2.0 available addressing problems with temperature & humidity:
Quote
For sensors that are produced with the STH40 sensor, it is possible that the sensor bus line might be a conflict due to working window overlapping. so we have this version released for the upgrade.

If your sensor shows/ed -- of temperature and humidity reading from time to time, we suggest you upgrade this version.  If your sensor never displayed this problem, your sensor might be produced with a sht30 sensor, and it is not necessary.

https://www.ecowitt.com/shop/forum/forumDetails/405
direct link to the update-package

Apparently the T/H sensor has been swapped from the SHT30 to the SHT40 in the meantime. I wasn't even aware of that.

Regards, Oliver

Hi , firmware update didnt work for me as i got two 144 kmh errors in the past month (rain and wind over 60 kmh ) , so i wrote to support on their website. Here's the reply. Maybe more people should ask Ecowitt to be able to edit the wind graphic to correct the errors.

"Hi, Vlad
I am sorry for this problem. But I think your request is reasonable. I have passed this request to our web designer.

Best Regards

the new fw. it work correctly only with the new version of the ws80 ( the version with covers on transducer). On the older one it doesn't fix the wind spike problem during the rain events (tested)

How do you know it's a newer version (apart from the transducer cover) ?
Any serial number, type specification ?
Or only by being able to easily disassemble it (the T/H unit) ?

Just installed a WS80 that shipped from Ecowitt in November.
Its reporting an outside temp of 140F and no humidity reading.Suspect this must be a newer unit.
I use a WH32 EP fpr outdoor temp, this reports a more believable 50F

It's pitch black outside, but if no one else posts pictures before hand, I'll try tomorrow.
Assuming it's not tipping down.

What are the other values like (sun radiation, wind ...) ? - normal or also "weird" ?
I think a reset could be helpful.
Begin with the "warm" reset using the reset hole and the opened end of a staple.
If this doesn't bring in any change, you will have to do the "cold" reset:
- take down the sensor array (WS80)
- take off the batteries
- put black tape on the solar panel
- wait until the array stops transmitting (could take 2 days) - when the console doesn't receive any reading and the little LED is extinguished. That's necessary as the super capacitor still provides power - it needs to expire first - hence the 2 days.
- then put in the batteries again
- check the values transmitted before you put it up again

If you get still astronomical values, ask Ecowitt for a T/H replacement unit. (if it was shipped in November, it should be the revised hardware already)
If after the T/H unit replacement the values are still too high, ask for a complete array replacement.
