A note on Ecowitt.net and multiple devices (consoles)
« on: June 28, 2021, 04:53:48 PM »
This is probably not a common issue, as most have one device reporting to the the Ecowitt.net site.

But if you have more than one, you may encounter an issue when arranging the tiles. If you have something like 8 soil sensors reporting through one, and 4 reporting through the other, arranging the tiles on either will mess up the other one. I believe I know why, something like a soil sensor for each console is reported as something like CH1 soil to the site. But you also have a CH1 soil on the 2nd device. I believe a cookie is being dropped for your arrangement on device #1, and also being read when you look at device #2, and vice versa. The actual names you apply to the sensors seem to stay (I could be wrong on that).

When I say cookie, I mean storing the data on your placement, may not be an actual cookie (stored local on your PC), but something server side.

So what is missing is device or ID , then sensor name and # and placement  in the storage. What I think is happening is only the the sensor name . and  placement are being stored, which may be common to both device 1 and 2. They should be stored with device or ID.

Anyone else seen this?

Adding, even if you move the "Battery" tile for one device, then go to the other device, you will notice it has been moved to the same place as the first device.

Thanks for that tip as I have 3 devices in Ecowitt.net but I had not noticed this effect though to be fair I dont tend to move tiles around!

It is irritating when you have stuff you want to keep in line as opposed to hunting for them , like the soil sensors.

oh well

A workaround would be to create a second Ecowitt account and move the 2nd station there.
Then your tile arrangement will be independent from your first account.
And you can place it in your browser in adjacent tabs and switch between the views easily.

Yes, but it is bit of a pain :)  I agree it may be a work around.

Simple to go up and select your other device from the same screen. I mean that is the point in offering multiple device sign up.

I am quite familiar with the coding that would be behind this, as it is the type I do daily. I'm sure it would be a simple fix if they are inclined. I'm sure the designers are not even aware as the # of people with multiple devices is probably quite small.

I agree it's a workaround, but in fact clicking on a second tab will be less mouse movements than opening the combo box and selecting the 2nd device.  ;)
Plus less loading time.

And, yes, that feature will only have a small customer base, hence they'll probably have other priorities.
If you know how to do this, why don't you ask Ecowitt for that feature and offer them sample code they could test and use 8-).
One hand washes the other.
I'd address Henry directly for that if you want to go down that road.

In the end , I was just pointing it out.

No I'm not going to offer code, it is a commercial site (run / maintained by a company). I'm sure they can figure it out. Just knowing the issue as pointed out in my first post and storing the device along with the placement coordinates of the tile, or its index (depending on how they are placing the tiles), should be more than sufficient.

If you post this feature request in the Ecowitt.com forum, yes, they might look into it.
I'm not sure if the Ecowitt engineers read our forum posts regularly ...
