Ambient Weather PM2.5 Has PM10
« on: April 24, 2020, 01:45:48 AM »
Hey guys,
I'm really excited to share an awesome find! I'm using an SDR (Software Defined Radio) to capture the packets coming from my AmbientWeather WS-2000. I was monitoring the output and I noticed a message from my PM2.5. As you would expect, it returned the PM2.5 value. BUT, also along with it was a PM10 reading! I have attached an image to this post displaying it. I do not know why AmbientWeather does not advertise or integrate this into their systems. I will definitely be adding it to my website ASAP. If anyone has questions, I will be happy to answer them.

This is very interesting.
I have had conversations with Ecowitt on this topic in the past as the sensor in the device can read PM10.
The last communication I had from them suggested that they chose not to use this value as it was less accurate than the PM2.5 value.
Perhaps they are coming around to the idea or have found a way to tighten the reading values.
Lets see if its a release update soon!
Wonder if its a value that will be available via the GW1000 API

It might of course be a product improvement for the latest PM2.5 devices and the older ones might not be transmitting this data so we cannot make use of it!

UPDATE:
After over 20 different samples, I have concluded that the AmbientWeather PM2.5 does not have PM10, as the value for it is always the PM2.5 + 1 ug/m^3. This still leaves the question as to why it is transmitting this number...

The GW1000 with its local API in regards to the PM2.5 sensor has two data values that are sent.... PM2.5 Now and PM2.5 Average 24 hours. That might be what you are seeing.

There is also mention of PM10 data but it is not well documented...seems incomplete.

The PM10 value sent from my AmbientWeather PM2.5 is consistently the PM2.5 value it sends + 1. It does not match up with the PM2.5 Average 24 hours reported on my AmbientWeather dashboard

Well then the GW1000 extra data must be calculated extras that it is doing then.

OK, I checked in with Lucy and as I thought this value is just not used.
Its always been transmitted by the sensor but the value is simply just not accurate enough so they don't use and don't plan ever to do so.
So you can chalk this one up to a curio
