When I first signed up almost three years ago it was in the wake of the announcement that Weather Underground had been bought by The Weather Channel Company.  At that time I was only supplying minimal data to Weather Underground from a Peet Bros. Ultimeter 2000 station.  Much has changed since then.  [As an aside, I am pleased that WU has undergone various improvements but to this point most of my fears have proven to have been unfounded.]

A bit over a year ago I moved from Marysville, KS to the farm I grew up on near Bremen, KS.  I got the U2k up and going again and continued on but wanted to be able to do a bit more so last week I took possession of a shiny new Davis Vantage Pro 2 wireless station.  I now have the station located in an area better suited for monitoring prevailing conditions although I am thinking of relocating the anemometer elsewhere on the farmstead to get a more accurate wind reading using the Davis wireless anemometer unit.

With this station I switched from the custom Perl script used with the U2k to WeeWX as it supports the Vantage Pro2 well.  I've also begun forwarding my weather data to APRSWXNET as of Thursday as WeeWX has direct support CWOP/APRSWXNET uploads.  After a bit of sorting it appears everything is working very well and the station is being incorporated into CWOP and it appears that data should flow to MADIS starting Wednesday according to the confirmation email I received.

I have my own domain and Web hosting at http://www.n0nb.us  However, the present WISP didn't offer the bandwidth out here to support video, even uploading an image every few seconds would have taxed it.  Then in March they sent letters to all the customers stating they were upgrading their system to offer 10 Mbps unmetered access.  It turned out that they would only retain customers within a five mile range of the towers they were keeping and are selling the tower closest to my place leaving me and plenty of neighbors with only metered access via satellite or cellular as options.  I am now paying through the nose for access via cellular.  It's a long and sordid tale that left a lot of us in a mess.

Until an unmetered option becomes reality here, if ever, I am going to need to be careful of my data usage.  So far I have deemed WU and CWOP uploads as acceptable usage.
