Doesn't Rainwise care about sales?
« on: May 26, 2014, 08:12:26 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm trying to buy a Rainwise MKIII with IP-100 interface, but it's seems to be an impossible task to get hold of them.

This website is my last hope before I get a Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus instead. Where can I order a Rainwise MKIII with IP-100 interface that will export to South Africa?

PS: Maybe I should buy the Davis anyway, because service from Rainwise appears to non existent.

Sorry for such a negative first post, but as soon as I can get my hands on a weather station I will contribute to the community in a for more positive way.

In the time it took me to read you rant, I found this:  http://www.ambientweather.com/rariip100lr.html  Any reason a manufacturer should sell directly to you?  GM and Ford won't sell me a car directly.

Thanks for the cheeky reply.

First of all, I did check the Ambient Weather website, but they do not export. Secondly, the Rainwise website says they should be contacted for international sales and they DO sell directly to customers. They are just not getting back to me, so I'm looking for another reseller that export these products.

BTW: I'm trying to buy a Weather station and not a car.

Does RainWise ship to countries outside the U.S.?

We do ship to countries outside the U.S. However, our "Free Shipping" offer does not apply to territories outside the contiguous United States. Shipping charges for orders shipped to all other areas area the responsibility of the customer.
We strive to choose the fastest and most economical method available. Any customs fees, document fees, and VAT taxes are also the sole responsibility of the customer.

Why not ship internationally?
Primarily fraud and returns. This drives up our costs for everyone. In addition to fraud, handling returns, customers refusing to pay unexpected import and duty fees, warranty issues, manufacturer exclusive distribution channels, and licensed wireless specifications are secondary reasons.

Do we make any exceptions to shipping internationally?
I am afraid we do not.

Thank you, will have a look.

EDIT: They don't have the IP-100 interface on their website, but I emailed them. I see shipping for the station will be $600, ouch. Then there is also the import taxes, this is an expensive hobby.

If they cared about sales, their stuff wouldn't be so expensive.

Just an update on this.

http://www.scientificsales.com got back to me and helped me choose a cheaper shipping option so I bought the MKIII and IP-100 from them.

Here's the final update on this topic.

It turns out that Rainwise does care about sales and they forwarded my original query to my local distributor and it's they that ignored me. Only after Rainwise requested an update did I receive a quote. The local price is too high though, so I'm glad that I decided to import the weather station myself.

I'm guessing that will be the case until he tries to get local service.

I won't ask for local service though and will get parts from the US should something fail.

Good that you are prepared for that.  This local market protection really bothers me and one tends to pay a crazy excess charge to buy local.  But go foreign and you get hosed.  Rainwise is EXCELLENT gear so I doubt you will have an issue.  Despite having a couple of Davis units, my next one might be Rainwise if I can get a decent deal.  :)
