Title: How can my wind QC ever pass MADIS if my local airport can't?
Post by: drewsaur on July 21, 2021, 12:13:46 PM
Greetings! This is my first post here. I have seen a lot of informative discussions about MADIS QC since getting involved in this fascinating world of CWOP, and I wanted to ask something that I haven't quite seen addressed in this forum elsewhere.

Like many PWSs, after my data was run for a couple of weeks, my Wind QC comes up as less than satisfactory:

But nobody around me seems to have good Wind QC, either...including my local airport (which is not a small or insignificant airport!):

If my local airport fails MADIS Wind QC, then what hope is there for little old me? I noticed at the time of sending this, my reported data and KROC's reported data basically matched, while the "Analysis" for our two stations differed wildly. Might this be just a factor of lots of bad wind data around me (and around our airport, which I would think should be considered authoritative)?

Welcome to the forum.  The wind analysis has had issues for a while.  Take a look at https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=39095.msg409212#msg409212 (https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=39095.msg409212#msg409212) and https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=41451.msg424730#msg424730 (https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=41451.msg424730#msg424730)

Yeah I never figured that one out - your major airport fails but you're great.
I know my anemometer is sited exactly 10 deg. declination and is at 33ft, yet I only get 72% and a L3 Spatial Consistency like everyone else LOL.
