Title: See update Re: GW1002/WH40 disillusionment
Post by: KC5JIM on July 20, 2021, 08:04:59 PM
UPDATE: Ecowitt reached out and offered to replace the WH40 for free since it was just within one day of the warranty.

I bought my GW1002 exactly a year ago today. My WH40 rain gauge has been dead for the past two days. New battery? Nope? Move 2 inches away from the GW1000? Nope. Reset GW1000? Nope. Water ingress? Nope? Other than the plastic discoloring from the UV, it looks as good as the day I installed it.

Bummer  #-o.

When Davis gets some eye candy in monitors I'm in.

Any chance that you purchased the station with a credit card that comes with extended warranty benefits? My American Express automatically gives me one extra year of warranty on purchases. You may be able to file a claim with your credit card. Some Platinum Visa and MC also have this benefit. Worth looking into. The neat part of this warranty is that you wouldn't have to ship it back to the manufacture....you just file a claim and then it will either be accepted or denied.

I'm not sure, but I will find out tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

Even my horrible AcuRite gave me 4 years of uninterrupted service, Ecowitt made exactly a 1 year.

What a waste.

Forgot to add - Ecowitt warranty told me that I would have to pay to ship the WH40 to them for "inspection" at a greater cost than just replacing it. I Guess it's time to embrace reality and bite the bullet for a Davis station.

Make sure to reset completely the unit ( as this is a very 'low power' device it may take very long, I mean hours not minutes ).
So 'wait enough' before reinserting new batteries.

P.S.
On the ecowitt forum a post shows how to dismount the sensor ( you may even ask Henry if a replacement for this part is available )

+this has just happened to me.  I lost a day of rain (no rain for 1.5 months here!), so I replaced the batteries with known good lithium.  I have 2 gw1000's, both are not seeing it, even after attempting to re-register the sensors.  I factory reset 1 of them to no avail.

It's just not broadcasting anymore.  I run rtl_433 on the side and I can see all sensors broadcasting, except the wh40.  I am at 11 months and 9 days since purchase.  I've contacted them on ecowitt, we'll see if they have any ideas on what to try next.

Out of curiosity, can you estimate how much rain you got?

And when did the unit stop broadcasting?, I mean I gather you know it was transmitting even with no rain , so did it stop as soon as the event started?

based on my homeassistant logs, it looks like it stopped broadcasting on 07/01.  We have not had any rain in 6 weeks, nor was I paying attention to my logs =/.  The rain events were 07/07 and 07/08.  I can fix the data from nearby stations, just frustrating =).  I need to pay more attention to logs!

I'm gathering you don't transmit to other locations like EcoWitt.net , which do make it easier to check status. Also, the data can be used by the Ecowitt support staff to look at your data and see when this occurred (this greatly helped me with my WS90 issues) , just an added assistance. I get it though if you like to keep your data private , even without making the data public on the site.

Also was this a unit that also transmitted the battery status?

great call out!  I do submit to ecowitt, but never look at it.  I can see the last transmit on their page is 07/06 @18:55HRS.  Now I need to go back to homeassistant and see if I can find that in the log. lol

In your email to ecowitt support, also include the URL to your Ecowitt.net device (even if it is set to private). If for no other reason other than it backs up your claim.

ECOWITT WH5360B was at the amazon warehouse around the corner, so I was able to get another one today.  I've emailed them and we'll see what they come up with, but at least I am covered.

Edit: The new one is installed and working fine, plus has reporting battery! so, it's a win.

Edit #2:  Ecowitt has already reached out for particulars for a replacement shipment!  so Thank you Ecowitt, great start to this experience!

Just an update on the awesome customer experience at ecowitt.net.

Yes, the sensor died.
Yes, I bought another one(upgraded WH40 w/battery data and little display console) because I am impatient.

Yes, Ecowitt came through and just arrived today with a brand new one WH40(the exact model I impatiently purchased!)!!!  From Techsupport ticket to arrival at my doorstop, 6 DAYS!  That is awesome!

Thank you Ecowitt! now I have a spare on the shelf!
