Title: Guest Book Getting Hammered with Spam!
Post by: Mark / Ohio on November 07, 2006, 09:56:57 PM
Anyone else finding their guest book filled with spam more than usual the last several days?

I've set mine so that no entries are shown until I review them first.  I've deleted a dozen or more the last two days alone.  All have Yahoo.com email addresses with links to an internet marketing software site.

I knew there was a reason why I could never be bothered in putting up a 'guest book' on any of my sites. ;)

Whilst it is often nice to know where your visitors are coming from, and any constructive criticism comes in handy, this spam issue is what puts me off these guest books.

I haven't seen any spam entries in mine since I switched to a Guestbook that has a graphic CAPTCHA   (http://www.meekerweather.com/imgonline/genImg.png) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha).  It is the only way to go.  It takes a little bit of setup because it uses a MySQL database and php, but that's where it gets its power as well. There is a prominent link to it on my home page if you want to take a look, and the code is available from Alex Guestbook (http://www.alexphpteam.com/?lang=en)

Heh. I've had my WordPress SLOweather blog up for over a year now. I get a hundred or more spam "comments" a day. I either need to disable comments entirely, or add one of those graphic thingys to validate the perps.

I put up a custom asp based contact page on SLOweather to keep the spam harvesters at bay. Now it's getting spammed. Not a lot yet, maybe one or two  a week. Some of them have figured out the sending part, but the message comes through blank.

I also use Wordpress for a blog. I use a plugin called Akismet to stop
comment spam and so far it has not missed a one.

Same here. Akismet works very nicely.

Thanks. I'll check that out.
