Title: Looking for a new NOAA radio that never shuts off
Post by: capeweather on February 27, 2008, 10:14:32 AM
I'm looking for a replacement radio that will never shut off once I turn it on. I'm currently using an older Rat Shack radio and about once a week it drops out and I have to manually turn it back on (Normally after a statement/watch/warning - Go figure). Do any of you have suggestions as to what radio I could buy to replace the one I currently have? A simple radio will do - don't really need the FM/AM stuff. Thanks for the help.  :-)

I'm assuming you have SAME turned on? Mine does that as well. Anytime there is a watch/warning/etc it turns on the speaker like it should but with the output plugged in you can't hear it. After the broadcast it for some reason kills the output so no more broadcast. I solved mine by turning off SAME on the radio I stream with. Works fine now. If you don't have that option look at the Midland WR-300 http://www.ambientweather.com/miwrwealra.html It is digital with great reception, no static or hum.

There is usually a weekly test, that will cause the SAME to kick in then the audio to turn off after a few minutes.

If you don't need SAME, try a scanner:

$99.00 here (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036233&cp=&sr=1&origkw=scanner+noaa&kw=scanner+noaa&parentPage=search) , designed for 24/7 operation, all NOAA channels (can be locked on any channel), can use external antenna

If you need SAME, I like Midland brand weather radios.

I have two weather radios but I think the Rad Shack is no longer sold but the Reecom R-1630 All Hazard/Weather Alert Radio that I have has never shut off and I use it for SAME only on the internet. When I first started using it I would have a problem with it turning off but with some tinkering it has worked like a charm. Has been very reliable and has battery backup. I bought it through Ambient Store.

Thanks for the input fellas. I actually hooked my old Reecom back up and can't figure out how to turn the SAME testing off. Somebody mentioned it on here that they have been running it constantly without it shutting off but unfortunately that was the day the forum took a dump and we lost a bunch of posts. I have the Reecom running now so I guess we will see what happens.
