Best Way to Connect Davis VP 2 to the Internet
« on: October 30, 2021, 12:25:02 AM »
What is the ideal way to connect a Davis VP 2 station to the Internet? Using a WeatherLink Live, an Ambient Bridge, or some other method (I am also getting into learning how to use a Raspberry Pi)? What websites are people generally posting weather station data to these days?

Thanks!

Depends on how deep you want to go.  If you don't have plans to have your own website right now, the WiFi Logger series data loggers are probably the simplest and cheapest.  You can get a WiFi version, or the new wired version.  And if you decide to run a website later, it'll still work well.  Just pick your weather software and point it to the logger.  Here is the site on what the logger can upload to:

Davis VP2, Cumulus, WeatherDisplay, Blitzortung, Saratoga Scripts, NOAA Stream via PI

You get immediate data on internet with Weatherlink Live and Weatherlink.com Bulletin and Map but that is not publicly available unless they have a weatherlink.com account.  And Weatherlink.com only upload data to CWOP, WU and GLOBE.

As merc says, WiFiLogger can send to the various sites, and also do a realtime.txt and wflexp.json file FTP to your website if you have that.

Both also work with weather programs like CumulusMX and others.

Enjoy,
Paul

Good info. Are there some instructions on how to connect a VP2 to a Raspberry Pi running WeeWX?

The WeeWx site has all the info:

https://weewx.com/

Users Guide:

https://weewx.com/docs/usersguide.htm

Actual code to get it installed.

https://weewx.com/docs/debian.htm

Etc. Etc.

You need some logger device to get the data from a console to the RPi.

I use the following:

1. USB Data Logger to RPI3b+
2. SDR and BME280 to RPI3b+

Both RPIs running weewx with appropriate drivers.

Any image for RPI to download ? No way to run it here. Thanks

Now that Davis has merged under AEM, I can probably grab a spare WLL or WLC and give this a spin.
