You don't need an account. Browse the map or search for a location using the search bar and then click on a station on the map to see the dashboard with all the sensors for that given station (dials, graphs, and data tables), including forecast.

That said an account will let you change unit preferences, save favorites, set alerts..etc. The account is free and you don't need to own a station.

Yep, my bad. I forgot Ghostery blocks the stations from displaying so I thought one needs to "join". Thanks.

Okay, stupid question #2? I can't see my PWS, do I have to join for that or already be an Ambient owner?

Two ways to get your station on Ambientweather.net (and one of those ways has some options):

  • Use an Ambient branded weather station that supports the feature (all the new ones as of a couple years ago work)
  • Use a Meteobridge (with any of the supported station brands - Davis and others works) with the added Ambientweather.net license for the Meteobridge. There are actually two ways to get this license onto your Meteobridge.
    • Buy a Meteobridge from Ambient that comes with this extra license already installed. Ambient calls their version a WeatherBridge.
    • Or use any other Meteobridge (bought elsewhere not from Ambient or self-built DIY) and only then purchase the one time $160 license from Ambient for Ambientweather.net

* The $160 ambientweather.net license is only for a Meteobridge that was not bought directly from Ambient. The Meteobridge that Ambient sells already has this license built in as an added value.

Yes, and I can understand that , unlike sites like WU which have similar features (and also issues). If you are not equipped with ambient weather stuff, there is a price tag in equipment to make your stuff so that it can post there. In general terms

Ambient:

  WH31B(2)

I'd be more than happy to share my data there...just not for a price. I'm good.

Yep. Some people completely automate their home or business with their sensors. Others just stick their head out the window.

And there are a lot of people in between.

Well? I say again.. What's your point? That was obviously meant as a backhanded slap, only I'm not sure where the superiority comes from.

Nothing like a merchant insulting a potential client, be it me or someone else. Nice job..

Although Galfert and I sometimes disagree on this, another option for people in the US is the ObserverIP
I happen to have one just laying around. All it does is send to ambientweather.net
It's a lot cheaper than the meteobridge license.

Yes, I agree. The ObserverIP is another option if you have an Ambient station whose original console does not upload to Ambientweather.net. But that is just an expansion of the Ambient branded station universe of options...it isn't really any different than instead getting another Ambient display console that also uploads to Ambientweather.net. Therefore I think that all this is covered under my number 1. option above.

I think using the ObserverIP is just fine for WU and for Ambientweather.net. What I disagree on is in using the ObserverIP with the the Meteobridge as I don't think that is a good combination because of reliability issues. It just taxes the ObserverIP beyond what it was designed to do.

My gut tells me to stay out of it. But another part of me tells me that I'd be running away from a moderation duty if I don't say something. So here I am. Here is what I have to say. I think there may have been some misunderstanding. I don't see the backhanded slap. I think Ed is just commenting that he feels very proud of the new service that he helped build and if you don't care for it then he is just saying that you are missing out, and that is fine too. That is it. No insult. It's all good.

Nah bro. Just sayin’ to each their own.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Is it true that although I purchased my Davis VP2 from Ambient years ago the only way I can give them my data is by purchasing meteobridge and a $160 license?

If so, why would anyone want to do that?

To each his own I guess.

No, you don't need to buy both from Ambient, you can buy a Meteobridge from Ambient for $135 and it comes with the $160 license value built in. It is just $135 total. You only pay the $160 if you got your Meteobridge elsewhere.
https://www.ambientweather.com/amweatherbridge.html

That $135 is because you can get - $10 off if you don't need the USB hub. Depending on your station model and logger you may or may not need this USB hub. That is why it lists for $145 with the USB hub... but if you don't need it you save the $10. Typically the Davis USB logger is a USB 2.0 device and the Meteobridge has a USB 1.1 port and there is a compatibility issue and the USB hub serves as a compatibility fix mechanism. But if you have a Davis WLL or a WeatherLink IP then you would not need the USB hub.

Another option is the Meteobridge NANO from Ambient. Same deal, the Ambientweather.net license is built in.

Our objective is to offer cool features for our weather stations, not to collect your data, although we do a good job of presenting it.

If you’re happy with what you have, that’s fine by us. We are just providing options for our customers.  If Davis Instruments wanted to share their stations, that is fine too.

Not sure why this is a bad thing?

I totally agree with Ed.

Ambient's cloud service is not any different from what the other companies are offering with their stations. Davis has Weatherlink.com and Acurite has myAcurite.com. You can debate the merits or pos and cons of each but that would be best reserved for another thread.

The point is that companies are now offering these cloud services because it is the going trend in how people want access to their data from anywhere on the Internet on any type of device (mobile or PC). Years ago weather stations came bundled with software that you installed on a local computer and your data was just there. The old software and the investment in developing and maintaining old software has been replaced with developing and maintaining a cloud service.

It isn't just weather stations. Decades ago I had an old bicycle computer and I downloaded the data to a local piece of software. Now the new stuff uploads directly to a cloud service and I can share my bike rides with friends and trainors. No need for local software. It's everywhere. It's the new way. Adapt, evolve, and compete or buh bye.

One of the cool things is you don’t need to own a station. You can set alerts on your neighbors station by favoring it.

This seems like a value added feature no one else has.
