Title: Spring/Summer 2022
Post by: Bunty on March 22, 2022, 12:54:11 AM
Time to start another time of year weather thread:

For the Southern Plains, March 21 was great for raining much of the day on land in drought all winter long.  Much of Oklahoma got 1 to 2+ in. of rain.

After one of the driest November thru 20 March periods on record for many reporting stations in NWS Hastings, NE, a lot of ranchers and farmers are hoping the spring will bring change. My CoCoRaHS station reported 1.4" in the snow/rain we had Tuesday night,  but many places north in Nebraska had little. "Abnormally Dry" for my location as of 24 March.

A little bit of a u-turn this week. 74° earlier this week, some rain and it is now snowing and temps down to 30°.

Tuesday
Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 8am. High near 64. West wind 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

That's a number not floated around here very often. I guess that means even I might see a 0.01". Maybe I'll get lucky and see a quarter, which is a whopping 50% of what I've gotten so far this year as is.  :-({|=

That Low is tracking right over us. Pressure is 29.15" now and still falling.  Max wind gust today 47 mph...so far.

On a more humorous note, the wind blew the David VP2 rain cone off (second time in last 4 months) and it was rolling around on the side of the driveway. The cat could not figure out what that dark shape was, but it was obviously up to no good and not to be trusted. His tail was huge and he was eye-balling that thing real good.

 Jeez, when I used the VP2 tipper, removing the cone was like pulling teeth. I mean I really had to yank on it. Matter of fact, I think I broke one of the tabs off it was such a PITA.

I have triple checked it both times. All the tabs are in place and the slots they fit into seem fine. It is just possible this unit has gotten weak/loose/stretched?,  or was never as tight as it should have been. I don't know the answer.

First time it blew off was during the dust storm in December 2021, gusts near 70; today gusts 45+. All day events may have loosened the unit.

Perhaps you could fashion a shim(s) or such to squeeze between the the slot/tab to tighten things up. Shouldn't be too difficult I would think..

It would appear things are getting off to a pretty quick start this spring. Mighty big area of 'moderate', and already the second such of this very early season.

That was unusually low.  Tuesday night pressure got down to 29.31 with a 35 mph gust.  There was a severe storm watch out.  Storms formed in two lines, and I was in the gap between them, so only got .01 out of the front.  Most of Oklahoma City was left out, too.

After an extremely cloudy, windy, cool, wet, and, for some areas of Minnesota, snowy April, the State Climatology Office summed it up this way:

But April's dreary weather is gone and. . .

An interesting evening in Chicago yesterday:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

We had almost ¾" of rain in about half an hour and major winds. Other suburbs and parts of the city faired much worse with tree damage and power outages, some are still out this evening. Currently we are in the high 90s, heat index at 111° F. More of the same tomorrow.

I live in Wheaton, a Chicago suburb about 20 miles Southwest of O’Hare. We didn’t get any rain here yesterday but today was a scorcher. 103F temperature with a 123 heat index. Tomorrow, Wednesday, is supposed to be about the same. Not a lot of fun. Miss being able to walk my dogs—too hot and dangerous for that!

Here,in the Republic of Ireland.....

Highest temp in over a century as mercury hits 33C in Dublin

A temperature of 33C was reported from the weather station at Phoenix Park in Dublin at 1pm on Monday, Met Éireann has said.

This is a provisional report but, if confirmed, it will be the highest temperature ever recorded in Ireland in July and breaks the high temperature records for the 21st and 20th century.

The highest temperature ever reported in Ireland was 33.3C at Kilkenny Castle in 1887. Met Éireann said this record stands but some have called in recent years for it be reassessed.

Meanwhile, many Met Éireann weather stations recorded temperatures of over 30C on Monday including in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, Oak Park in Co Carlow and Dunsany in Co Meath.

Surprised our GB folks haven't chimed in today about the record heat! Heathrow crushed their all-time record! I believe I heard that only 1% of homes have a/c as well.

"The U.K. Met Office registered a provisional reading of 40.2 degrees Celsius (104.4 degrees Fahrenheit) at Heathrow Airport -- breaking the record set just an hour earlier. Before Tuesday, the highest temperature recorded in Britain was 38.7 C (101.7 F), a record set in 2019."

Shocking! The media sensationalize? Never! All "legitimate" runways are not just determined by length and width, but by weight-bearing capacity as well. I suspect that the concern is heavier a/c may sink slightly into the asphalt (not an issue for concrete runways), causing damage, and repeating the process would only exacerbate the issue, so the surface needs to cool before resuming normal operations. At older asphalt intersections here in town, it is not uncommon to see the surface bulging slightly as car brakes are being applied and pushing the surface upwards. Nothing to do with the witch's demise in The Wizard of Oz.

An interesting look at how the rain goes when summertime pop-up thunderstorms develop near overhead and move slowly before dying out. In the Stillwater area on Aug. 9, the rainfall amounts ranged from 0 on the east to 3.13 on the southwest.

Another whiplash couple of days. Saturday we had a tropical heat index of 106°. Sunday rain and storms. A lot of rain came west of us but when it got closer it parted ways and passed north and south of us. This morning’s temp was a low of 57° and this will be the second “Chamber of Commerce” day, mostly clear skies and low humidity.

It is more likely in spring and fall. Mid August more unusual. That was what was noteworthy about it. This morning's low was 61, so we might get a range of 35-40 degrees. More in keeping with this time of year.

Nice classic view of the monsoonal subtropical ridge, and accompanying "ring of fire". Been a great season here, as long as you don't live in my neighborhood. Haven't even been able to muster an inch of rain, when I should be at about four by now. Running out of time as I'm on pace for another 400% below average rain again, just like 2020. The western deserts must be a rainforest by now, as they've once again been hammered this season. Hopefully I'll get something from the inverted trough over south Texas when it gets here. Right....

Oh, it's coming, and we'll probably see another flood watch as well (our third?), not that that matters to me. Incredibly frustrating to watch storm after storm get literally to the door step only to have it dissipate, go around, or be LP just like yesterday's red echo over top that didn't deliver a damn drop.
