HP2551 Firmware Update
« on: June 11, 2019, 07:10:41 AM »
For those folks that have the Ecowitt HP2550/1 colour console a new release of Firmware has been posted today 11/June/2019
V1.4.6

This can be found at
http://www.ecowitt.com/upfile/201906/user_V1.4.6.zip

If you have not already it should be noted that there is also a Wifi firmware update (1.3.8 ) also available which is done via the WS-View app on your favourite android device. It is recommended that you do both.

This mirrors the version posted for Ambient WS-2000 but is of course for the Ecowitt devices or other Fine Offset clones of that console.

Done mine and was interested to read the following:

"Supports upload to user customized website(needs to have the same protocol with the weather underground or ecowitt.net) on the WS View app."

I'm assuming this means that we can now use the console to upload data to our own personal website using a template such as Saratoga - anyone know if this is what it means?

If it is, are there any guidelines anywhere? Can't see any release notes or guidelines on the ecowitt.com website.

I hadn't set the WiFi up on my console due to the GW-1000 doing all of the work. However, I thought i'd have a tinker with it, but it seems that the WiFi firmware was already at 1.3.8 for me.

Yes that should be possible, but not out of the box. Script to grab the data is needed.

No. No official documentation, but I have put together a few words about it here:

Good spot.
Upgraded with no issues.
Link to HP2551 firmware is here:
http://www.ecowitt.com/upfile/201909/user_V1.5.1.rar

I would add that my console has booted and is now using the WS-80 Ultra-sonic anemometer as its wind source as indicated by the extra signal strength icon
No other obvious changes that I can see and without a change log hard to know!

Hello all, a new firmware has been released for the HP2550/1 at Ecowitt

http://www.ecowitt.com/upfile/201910/HP2551_V1.5.2.rar

Its 1.5.2 and is designed to fix some reception bugs.
I have been testing it and it seems more stable than 1.5.1 with no reception drops noted so far.

Once installed via SD card and the system auto updates if you check via WS-View you will find a new WiFi Firmware to install as well (1.4.4)

All good.

I installed this software V1.5.3 from :
https://ambientweather.net/help/ambient-weather-ws-2000-firmware-download-center/
on the Ecowitt HP2551-C station.
Almost everything works as it should.
The only minus: I have three soil moisture sensors and the station receives a signal from all, but only shows from the first.
Sorry for my English.

Nice....I have long suspected this would be the case!
Question is can you now also get access to Ambient.net?
That would be worth getting hold of and tempt me to run the Ambient firmware as I have always missed the smart home integration possibilities with the Ecowitt.net version.

Also, from the WS-View app what options do you now see for the HP2551?
Does it no longer respond to the app or does it still offer Ecowitt.net or Ambient.net etc...
I have often wondered if the code base is all there and just hidden, so I am wondering if you overwrite with Ambient firmware if you can still use Ecowitt.net AND ambient.net........

Unfortunately, I didn't get access to Ambient.net.
They check something more than just where the firmware was downloaded from.
In the WS-View application it is exactly the same as with the firmware downloaded from Ecowitt.
I can still send data on Ecowitt.net

I believe that you need to register the MAC in order to be able to send data to ambient.net
They (ambient) probably know what MAC ranges they have sold and as its unique that's the magic key.
Shame as it would be kind of awesome to have both Ambient and Ecowitt facilities (but putting reality hat on, not likely!)

I have both Ambientweather.net and Ecowitt.net with the same sensor array and all extra sensors.

There are two ways to accomplish this.

  • Have both an Ecowitt console and an Ambient console. Say a GW1000 and a WS-2000. This only works if your station is 915 MHz because all Ambient stations are 915 MHz only.
  • Add a Meteobridge to your GW1000. Then add the Ambientweather.net license to the Meteobridge ($160).... or by a Meteobridge from Ambient which they call a WeatherBridge ($145) which already is fully licensed for Ambientweather.net and for Meteobridge software.

* UPDATE - March 2020 - Ambientweather.net license for Meteobridge has new lower price, now just $100

Confirmed that this has now been publicly released for the HP2551
http://www.ecowitt.com/upfile/201911/HP2551%20V1.5.4.zip

The key things here are the ability to support more PM2.5 sensors and Soil Moisture sensors.
For those with a mixed environment (like me) or who have possible neighbours with kit you can now choose which sensors you want to use via your console in the same way that you can with the GW-1000

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

There is also the ability to now calibrate the additional sensors on the HP2551 should you wish to do so in the same way that you can with the GW-1000 through the extended setup page

Hello all,
I'm new in this forum.
I want a weather station that pick up with Ambient Weather TX-3102 Wireless 7-Channel Soil Moisture.
Can someone tell me if the HP2551 is compatible with these sensors (915mhz).
I leave in France and it's difficult for me to have the WS-8478A.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

I am not familiar with that sensor however Ambient weather site quotes the following:
The TX-3102 is an additional sensor for the Ambient Weather WS-8482 Wireless Internet Remote Monitoring Weather Station. It requires the console and is not a stand alone product. It does not work with any other Ambient Weather models.

So the clear answer is that no this is not compatible with the Ambient WS2000 or Ecowitt HP2551 or any other Fine Offset originated weather station combo.
If you are living in France then you should not really be using a 915Mhz weather station as you might be causing interference to Mobile Phone and other services that in Europe use this band.

If you want and like the HP2551 then this will support up to 8 Ecowitt soil moisture sensors. The alternative is to purchase the GW-1000 and the soil sensors but this way you will not have a visual display to look at but will need to use the Phone app. This will be cheaper if you don't require all the other aspects of a weather station and are only interested in soil moisture.
Contact lucy at support@ecowitt.net for a quote.

You can also purchase the GW-1000 and soil sensors from Froggit in Germany which will be quicker and avoid customs etc

The WS-8478A and its sensors have nothing in common with other Ambient branded stations. This is because the WS-8478A is manufactured by a different company than the other Ambient branded stuff. Ambient sells hardware from a few different manufacturers and slaps the Ambient brand on everything they sell. For this reason sensors only work with the same manufacturer of the console. Their biggest sellers are the stations made by Fine Offset like WS-2000, WS-2902A.

Ambient Weather isn't the only company that does this (sell many different manufacturers stuff). Froggit also does the same thing. Therefore you need to not mix sensors that were manufactured by different companies. Ambient and Froggit don't actually manufacture anything. They just sell other companies stuff.
