Topic: End of month climate statistics from WeatherCat.

Dear Weather Enthusiasts,

The Trixology software WeatherCat has a nifty feature to summarize what the climate has been compared to station records.  WeatherCat users have grown accustomed to sharing this data as a way to sample the weather across the world.

WeatherCat works with a companion program for iOS called WeatherCatRCP.  Using the two, I have generated the following summary of the weather for the start 2025 in the greater San Francisco Bay Area:

As you can see, January and February were very different weatherwise.  February was extremely wet in the San Francisco Bay Area, but the extra rainfall didn't make up for the lack of rain in January.  We shall see what March brings.

California is known to have very well defined wet and dry seasons with very brief spring and fall transitions.  This year is no exception.

So which WeatherCatter will be bold enough to be the next contributor of their statistics for May?

Here in the mountains of northern Utah, like most of the western states, we are staring a drought in the face.

May was... Warmer than average (48.26°F versus an average of 45.17)
Drier than average (1.41 in versus an average total of 2.30)
Calmer than average (a wind run of 3,078 miles versus an average of 3,239)

Here in the mountains of Northern Utah, we received a Trace of rain yesterday evening, but scored a Zero for the month for the first month since I have lived here (18 years). 100% of Utah is in either Abnormally Dry or in some stage of Drought for the water year.

And we have had 398 wildfires in the state so far this year. Of these, 282 were human-caused, and 52 were due to natural causes like lightning strikes. The remaining 64 fires are of unknown origin. Total acres burned so far is 48,716 (19715 hectares).

June was...
     Warmer than average (59.37°F versus an average of 57.48)
     Drier than average (0.00 in versus an average total of 1.08)
     Calmer than average (a wind run of 2,647 miles versus an average of 3,074)

The end of June seems to be taking us toward a very hot summer, but only time will tell.

And we have had 398 wildfires in the state so far this year.

Those are interesting statistics to share.  Here are the equivalent for California.  There have been 3,290 wildfires accord to CalFire.  I couldn't find a listing of various causes.  However, there have been 96,994 acres burnt (39252 hectares.)  There have been 16,276 structures destroyed and 30 confirmed fatalities.

We shall see what the summer brings . . . . .
