Davis VP2 Plus FARS in Cochranville, PA
« on: July 21, 2020, 04:40:36 PM »
Just installed my new station yesterday.  Right now the anemometer is at about 12' but will soon go up to 33' once the new mast comes in.  That'll get some guy wires to make it sturdy.  So far, working great!

Nice installation. Can't wait to see your 33' mast setup.

Looks good but just curious what the crossbars are for. Aesthetic?

Updated - New mast, up to 33 feet.

alexstarr - CWOP, WU, Ambient, WeatherLink, and PWSWeather

ocala - the crossbars are to support the mast mount, but I made them a bit wider for adding additional sensors later - like air quality, that sort of thing.

Heads up...watch out for deer running into the guy wires like what happened to mine and brought my tower down.

Gotcha. Looks like you have some wide open spaces there for some good wind data. Mine is at 33ft but still blocked in certain directions. :-(
tvweatherman would tying some kind of ribbons on the guy wires at about 4ft help with the deer situation.

I used stiff 8 ft. yellow plastic guy wire guards like this:
https://www.linemen-tools.com/Guy_Guard_Markers_s/301.htm

I found a local contractor/municipal supplier, went there and bought 3 for about $8 each, avoiding shipping. They are molded with a split down their length, so you can pop them onto a guy wire that is already attached at both ends. Good to have when you're cutting grass, too!

What type of mast do you have, and how can you lower or tilt it down for anemometer maintenance?

Good suggestion.  I'll look into those - I was going to do a few streamers, done those before with other guy wires, but the sleeves are cleaner.

The mast is custom made - the bottom 20 feet or so are 2" 0.25 wall aluminum, the top section is 1.5" welded inside the 2" section.  It's bolted to the wood support with standoff mounts, so just have to detach the guys and unbolt it and step it down.  It's fairly light, so easy to just lift up and down.

Nice setup.  [tup]
Glad to see you were able to get the 33' height for the anemometer. It's nice to have the room to do so.

Awesome! I work at the local NWS office in Mount Holly, NJ. We ingest all CWOP data and send it out via PNS statements during high impact events for heavy rain, high winds, etc., so I'll keep a look out for your station ;)
