Random Timeout Error
« on: May 14, 2022, 01:22:36 PM »
I have recently started receiving timeout errors after updating a few out of date scripts shown doing my routine "check-fetch-times". I am using GoDaddy hosting. When I ftp into the server I can see that Cumulus is updating properly. I was still on PHP 7.2 so I updated to 8.1 and that had no effect. Without being able to load the page I am not able to look for problems. I do have an error in my error file, however I don't think it would prevent my site from loading.

Suggestions please, thank you.

Ralph

Edit: It is not loading at all now - the reason I can't look for issues.

Thank you for the reply. That has me scratching my head. I have tried multiple browsers, cleared the cache, all the usual "first checks". I have attempted using three different PC's all with the same result. I'm stumped on this one.

See if your host has 'blocked' your IP, if you've been doing a lot of server work today.

I am also with GoDaddy and have had the same issue over the past couple of weeks, anything with http://komokaweather would not load from my home network.  All my uploads were going through fine.  I called GoDaddy and they said it was my Internet Provider's issue as GoDaddy support could load it just fine.  They suggested I try it on my phone using cell and turning off WiFi and Bluetooth, and that displayed my sites ok.

Suggestions please, thank you.

I called my IP and they gave me a support ticket.  In less than 24 hours all was ok again from my home network.  I still get intermittent failure to load but these failures are now very short term, and checking my site via FileZilla everything is uploading just fine.

Enjoy,
Paul

I was checking out your site, using MS Edge, this morning with no issues and then nothing would load beginning at 0649 ET with this message from each page I tried:

Hmmm… can't reach this page
www.hsnpar.com took too long to respond
Try:

Checking the connection
Checking the proxy and the firewall
Running Windows Network Diagnostics
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

I just tried from my PC on Midcontinent cable in North Dakota.  Your site was quite slow to load. It event timed out on me once.

I have GoDaddy shared hosting as well and have had no speed issues as of late.

While I was on hold with GoDaddy support yesterday afternoon, it started working...   just about right huh?
However, after a couple of hours of working flawlessly it quit updating. Checked the server and it had current data, as it has had every time I have checked it, probably 30 or 40 times since this started. This morning it is working fine...  we'll see for how long.
During the course of the day yesterday I updated PHP from 7.3 to 8.1 but since it didn't help, I reverted back to 7.3. Does Cumulus 1.9.4 play nice with 8.1?

Appreciate everyone's thought's and suggestions.

In checking your site I did encounter a few times of delay or not loading.  But then a few minutes later all is very good.

Neither Cumulus1 or the standard templates use PHP so are not affected by PHP updates.  But you are using the Saratoga template which is PHP and Ken has been great on updating the scripts for working with recent PHP versions.   A look at your https://www.hsnpar.com/check-fetch-times.php?show=versions  shows you are pretty well keeping your scripts up to date.

Enjoy,
Paul

Thanks Paul...

After having no issues this morning, I have been unable to access my site all day. I am receiving time out errors using any browser.
On the Chrome browser I ran the "try Running Windows Network Diagnostics" and received the "Problems found" shown below.
I have attempted to call GoDaddy several times today, each and every time I get "wait time exceeds 60 minutes" and it goes straight to music on hold. If I remember correctly there is usually an option to receive a call back if you don't want to hold. Whether my problem exists with them or not, they definitely are having problems.

The NWS alerts site (alerts.weather.gov) appears to be having issues this morning and could be contributing to the problem.

<!-- Total process time: 6.1338 seconds -->

That's six extra seconds of wait time for the page right there (consistent with the wait I had). Have you ever considered setting up a cron job for alerts? I'd highly recommend it if possible.

I have spoken to GoDaddy and my ISP and both say they can't find any problems.
In the rare event that I don't receive a timeout error, and the page displays, it will update properly (10 sec) for about two minutes and thats it. The last time it was up I went to the "inspect" tab. I am not familiar with using it to debug, however I was able to watch in real time the activity. Here are a couple of screen shots from Firefox and Chrome. Sorry if the size is large, I reduced them 50%.
Any tips on how to use the browser for debugging would be appreciated.

Yep, currently, you and I both showing delays; mine in/out of Chicago, you have two bottlenecks: thru ATT, and also out of Chicago to Host.  Especially bad to host.  Watch your email for thoughts....Mike

My problem has been found. It didn't start until I upgraded a few scripts several days ago. I decided to try resorting to the previous version of scripts prior to my updates. The site ran fine, no issues at all. Going through them one at a time, I left the upgraded script if it had no effect. When I changed the check-fetch-times.php it started working fine. No time outs loading the page and the updates are proper too. The updated version of the script is only 4 days old, not that that implies anything other than there are probably a host of folks that haven't updated yet and possibly they will run into the same problem I did. My only problem now is when I run "check-fetch-times.php?show=versions" it displays a "need update" for the script.

Thanks to everyone that contributed their time to helping me.
