  • Hi there!
I now have a ambient weather station and for the life of me I can't get a application key with the ambient weather network. I can make API Key all the day long. But the areas were you have to tell ambient why you want a application key. a key is never made.

My account is in free right now. IF I have to pay then I will forget about it.
Thanks

API key and Application key seems to be the same for Ambient.
However, it also seems that you have to have at least one qualified device registered to AWN.
Do you have the MAC address of your WS-2000 (or whatever your Ambient console is) registered in your AWN account ? Having an account alone is not enough.

The API and App Key are separate items.  Depending on what you are trying to accomplish you may need both.

An API Key is used to securely connect your weather station to applications created by outside developers.

If you are developing your own application you will also need an Application Key in addition to the API Key.

ok. So I want to have my weather station connected right with my home assistant computer. and it says on the home assistant settings that I need a API key. I will do more searching. Thanks for the info!

that will depend on how you want to connect to HomeAssistant.
Which integration or add-on do you want to use and how do you connect ?

EDIT:
with as WS-5000 you may be able to use the Ecowitt integration, especially for the basic sensor data - then you don't need a key from the console end.
HomeAssistant will provide you with an "API Key", a webhook which you have to use with your customized server option in your console.
Have a look at our WiKi under HomeAssistant.

An Ambient WS-5000 console is a clone of the Ecowitt HP25x0 console.

so, what exactly do you need an Ambient App key for. For sure not for a direct console - application communication.
Maybe for an application - AWN communication.
As for the latter - where do you get it and how is it supposed to be used ?
The Ambient site, also in their support section, doesn't give any hint - or its well hidden.
So, maybe you know more and can share this information ...

I needed the api key for a small python menu bar app I created for my mac.  When you go to your account and create your API Key there is some verbiage at the bottom of the page regarding the Application Key.

To locate the API info I simply searched ambientweather.com/support and typed API in the search bar scrolled down until I found API.  When clicking on the API result it will take you to a page with a link to the docs etc.

OK - so far so good
the creating is one thing, and, I know that I have to enter them when using e.g. the SmartMixin app.
But, is there any documentation how to use these API and APP keys ?
e.g. a description of how to retrieve data from AWN ... e.g. current, historical, from - to etc.
how is that API to be called, what is the protocol, where does the API and APP keys fit in ?

The only reason why I wanted it was so I could have a connection with my weather station with my home assistant. I have a connection right now. But it needs the internet. So if I lose internet my home assistant will lose the connection with my weather station.

Looks like I have a lot of more reading on my plate.

I'm sure you have (or can get) the right firmware - the latest device firmware is 2.0.4 and you can find it in our WiKi under HP2550/HP2560:
https://meshka.eu/Ecowitt/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=start#console_firmware_device_wifi_-_latest_versions
regarding HomeAssistant see WiKi
https://meshka.eu/Ecowitt/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=start#homeassistant
what is said for the Ecowitt integration should in this case also apply to the Ambient WS-2000/4000/5000 consoles.
Anyway worth a try.
