WS3800 and WS3900 / WS3910 Backlight
« on: October 05, 2024, 03:50:18 AM »
I'm looking to buy my first weather station and have been studying the wiki (an amazing resource, thank you to all involved). I have identified the array and sensors I want, but am having a hard time deciding on the console.

I want something that will last for many years, hence leaning towards the LCD displays, rather than the TFT.

I don't want another backlit screen in my life; I'd prefer something that I can mount on the wall and not have any light pollution coming from it.

Questions are:-

  • Can the WS3900 / WS3910 be viewed without the backlight?
  • For all models, does the backlight time out? i.e. if I press the light button so I can view the display, will it automatically turn back off after 15 seconds or so? If not, how many button presses are necessary to turn it off again?
  • Might be a long shot, but if anyone has both a WS3800 and a WS39xx, any chance of a side-by-side comparison photo, preferably with backlight off? And which do you prefer?

Thanks!

Hi!

Without a backlight, you won't see anything on the WS39xxC - it is essential for the display.
The WS38xxC is different - you can see the values even without LED backlighting.
If the display of the WS39xxC is switched off, you need to press the Light button to switch on the backlight.
However, a further 4 button presses are then required to switch the backlighting off again.

I have the backlighting switched on automatically by schedule - it is switched on in the morning and switched off in the evening. This works very well.

Thank you Oliver for your quick reply, that's a huge help!

One last request - any chance of a side by side photo with both units on the lowest backlight setting?

Decided to get the WS3800, as I'll be able to read results during the day without a backlight. If I can't read the display in the evenings from normal room lighting, then I'll schedule the backlight to turn on for a couple of hours.

Have placed my order and looking forward to it arriving. Thanks for your help Oliver!

Hi!

Which one are you running the schedule on Oliver ?
I have this timer active on all compatible consoles available here: HP3501C, HP2551C, WS3800C, WS3910C, WN1980C.
Unfortunately, the WS2910C and the WN1900C as well as the old WH2626 do not support this function.
At least on the WS2910C I would have expected this feature.

How do you setup timer on the HP2551C model ?
You have to do this via the console GUI interface:

gear (the button on the far right)
9 x down (the third button from the right) to Backlight
magnifying glass - (2nd button from the left)
activate Automatic control backlight (navigate with cursor, activate with magnifying glass -)
and configure the times for Turn on the backlight and Turn off the backlight

BTW:
Maybe you would also find this useful?

read the manual for the HP25x0 console (or the HP2551/2552/2553 stations- a HP2551C doesn't exist, only a HP25x0C - better don't mix device and model(kit) names - for details I recommend reading the WiKi)

Hi!

Quote
a HP2551C doesn't exist, only a HP25x0C
Because I was the one who mentioned this name here first...
My console is called a HP2551AE - to make it clear that it is a console and not a station (i.e. a bundle), I like to add a C for console to the name - because there is no kit with this name.
Ecowitt may have changed the naming in the meantime. Maybe I need to be a little more careful with the naming of the consoles in the future.
However, my console itself is called HP2551 - even if you doubt its existence.

We don't need to discuss the correct naming of the parts here. A clear name is obvious. Of course.
But this wasn't about the naming of the devices, but about the automatic switching on and off of the console's backlight. In this context, it is irrelevant whether the console itself or the console as part of a kit is meant.

For the sake of completeness: here is the link to the manual quoted.

Hi all,
is anyone here, who could share how the colored version = WS3820 looks without backlight?

The WS3800 seems to be fully ok during day light.
I'm a bit concerned whether the colors at WS3820 do not make that unreadable.
