La Crosse 328-10618V3

(1/1)

Hello everyone,  first post, brand new member.

I have had several La Crosse indoor/outdoor temperature/humidity units over the years and have been happy with them.

I got it in my head that I wanted a weather station, so I purchased La Crosse’s new model, the 328-10618V3.

The setup went quite well; all the sensors came on-line without issue.

As luck would have it, we had a small system go through that deposited some rain.  In comparing my stand-by, old-school rain gauge to what the La Crosse displayed, the La Crosse was roughly light by 50%.  In checking with my neighbor, his gauge was within .1” of my reading. This got me wondering, so I’d did some calculations.  (And if I’m wrong on these assumptions, please don’t beat me up!).

I carefully measured the area that actually captures the rain on the sensor and came up with 28 square inches.  So I figured, if an inch of rain fell, that sensor would capture 28 cubic inches of water.  Converting 28 cubic inches of water to ounces, I came up with, for all practical purposes, 16 ounces.

I measured out 16 ounces of water and dribbled it into the sensor, in a couple of sessions, over about 15 minutes.  The base unit read .33”.   I waited over an hour, and repeated the process.   This time it only recorded .08”.

The device inside the sensor (the teeter todder for lack of a better term) seemed to function completely linear to the volume I was dribbling into it.

I’m at a loss!

Welcome to the forum!
I see that mine is the first reply your post has received.  I no longer have any LaCrosse equipment so I don't really have a solution to your rain gauge issue.  Offhand, assuming your gauge 'top' is roughly 6" in diameter, your math appears to be correct.  :)

I did look review the specs for that unit and am rather surprised that while it has a wind speed sensor, it does not have a wind direction sensor.  That strikes me as rather lame -- to me the whole point of a local weather station is to measure "local" conditions. LaCrosse seems to think that feeding wind direction to your display from the "internet" is an acceptable source of wind direction.

So, in your situation, given the rain issue you are experiencing, and the wind issue, I'd return the station to the vendor and buy something else (assuming a return is still possible).

When I gave up on my last LaCrosse, I moved to Ecowitt equipment, and have been pleased with my experience.  :D
