Topic: Arizona Monsoon Season Review.

The review of Monsoon 2020 is in.  This year's monsoon season was Hottest and Driest in Arizona's  History for Most of Arizona's towns and cities.
This was mainly because the area of high pressure (Monsoonal Ridge) aloft that drives the annual monsoon flow remained right over the top of Arizona or to the south for a large part of Summer which suppressed thunderstorm activity and kept deep monsoonal moisture to our south and this led to the very hot temperatures we experienced this summer. For many towns and cities, it Significantly increase annual rainfall deficit after a decent winter rainy season plunging all of Arizona into drought again!! Spot on explanation. The western deserts didn't seem to fair to badly (I think about five people live out there), but for the rest of us, it wasn't a bad monsoon..it was non-existent. I ended up with over a 400% deficit of rain along with our recording tying, if not breaking days of over 100F, which was 99. Salt on the wound. Not only, the long term is progged to be a warm and dry winter as well. Little more salt please..

I always looked forward to the incredible time-lapse films some lucky talented guy seemed to post every year.  I can't recall his name,  but they were on Vimeo or UTube or something.

I not only was in awe of the videos and what he was able to see and capture, but his talent in knowing where there were good vistas and the equipment to get the pix.

From what the discussion is here, it sounds as if there will be no significant events to post this year?

Had the monsoon even shown up, it'd be long gone by now.  Normally it's between early July to mid Sept.

Hi Dale,

Is this the guy your thinking of https://www.mikeolbinski.com/storms/ He does catch some incredible storms. Although this year those were probably confined to the International Border with Mexico that is only area that really saw many storms. I have seen several presentations he has made for our local AMS chapter. He is a nice guy and a talented photographer.

The drought in Arizona is extending itself east of the Rockies.  Recently, my area went to the yellow zone for abnormally dry.  Further west, part of western Oklahoma is in a more severe drought status.
