Anemometer question
« on: January 11, 2020, 10:23:22 PM »
So, I have my new station up and running.  Everything looks good except for the wind speed.  I can't help but think it's reading low.  Also watching the anemometer spin, it seems a little rough.  Even when there is a slight breeze it often doesn't move.  (It seemed fine when I assembled it)

Comparing it to another station close by, I am always seeing much lower speeds.
Mine https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IFEATH6
Neighbour   https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IFEATHER13

I know it can be calibrated, but how do I do that short of holding it out of the car window while driving along?
Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Thanks

Yes, I can multiply the displayed speed by a factor of 50% to 150%

I think it is just a siting issue. You've probably got trees or you aren't as high as your neighbor's station.

The station is dropping out. Bad location of the receiver, or bad internet connection?

Anemometers can be rather difficult to site. Usually the first location you try doesn't work the best.

Probably trees.  We are surrounded but the station is on a 5 metre pole well away from the trees.  We do seem to have our own microclimate as regards the garden, so maybe the wind is that filtered.  I may try putting the station on top of the TV mast which is on the house roof and close to the level of the tree tops.  It would be an interesting comparison.  (or maybe another separate anemometer up there)...... must see what is available.  I have my 915MHz GW 1000 so I could run a separate one on there.  Hmmmmm.

Then you may start jacking with the temperature/humidity. The dilemma of all-in-ones.

Yeah, I'm not sure what that is, but if you can split them up, certainly the way to go.

Perfect! Now you can put the main array down where it belongs as well. Win win!

****UPDATE****

Summary.   I was suspecting my new tri-arm amemometer wasn't turning properly.

I got a replacent from Misol (Fine Offset reseller).  It took months to arrive because of postal issues with Covid.  I put it on the station yesterday and the speeds seem to be reading slightly higher.  The main diffweence is the cups rotate even when there is no obvious breeze.  Before I got frustrated by watching trees moving, but the anemometer didn't budge.  So a big difference     Very Happy.

Just looked at the wind chart from Cumulus MX and it varies 0.1 to 0.5kph all day.  Before the graph would have recorded zero all day.  I have never seen it like a worm crawling along the bottom of the chart before.

 Thanks Misol, great customer support.
