Title: WXforum.net to be moved to new hosting - 11-Jan-2020 10am-12noon Pacific time
Post by: saratogaWX on January 10, 2020, 09:13:58 PM
I've configured up a new VPS (2 CPU, 2GB RAM, 60 GB SSD disk,  ‪CentOS Linux 7.7.1908, PHP 7.4, Plesk Obsidian 18.0.21, Apache/NGNIX) as a base for WXForum.net and the cumuluswiki.  I've pre-ported the software and configurations/databases to the new host.  The downtime will be used to catch up the database and attachment/avatar files with changes from my snapshot today.

I'll be setting the forum here to maintenance mode at 10:00am on Saturday, 11-Jan-2020 and hope to be back online by 12:00 Noon the same day (Pacific time).

Best regards,
Ken

Coincidentally, and un-related, NOAA Weather Radio Org (https://noaaweatherradio.org/) will be moving to new servers on or about January 13 ... see post elsewhere.

And we are up on the new host!

Ok, Move completed (about 15 minutes late).  I had to do some repairs on the attachments directory and make sure all is working.

mail from the forum (for replies/PMs) is not yet filtering out, but I'm working on that.

Please report any errors you encounter with the new hosting in this thread.

I noticed that IPv6 is not working. Nobody is login in with IPv6 addresses. Also nslookup only responds with IPv4 address. Is there no AAAA record for new host?

WooHoo
Just got my 4G internet running and first site I looked for was WXforum, only to find it down.  Then your back Huray!  Well done for such a quick and painless migration!

Tapatalk plugin updated to Version 4.5.7.  Hopefully this will fix those pesky issues.

Hi All,

All seems to be working fine on my end.

Thanks Ken for the heads up and all that you do for our weather hobby.

'Tis true... only a measly IPV4 address is assigned to the VPS at this time, so I pulled the old AAAA records (as they pointed to the old host).  For now, we'll just have to stick with 'Old School' IPV4 space.

Good.  Leave it that way.

Okie dokie. The only problem I see is from an administration point there will be some users that will be coming through IPv6 to IPv4 ISP gateways and therefore possibly sharing IPv4 addresses. It will be more difficult to blacklist/ban/verify new and existing users. Many mobile networks already are IPv6 only (I don't get an IPv4 address on AT&T). Sure they fall back to IPv4 but it is a shared IPv4 address via ISP gateway. Not an emergency but something to consider when time permits.

Another bonus with sticking with IPV4 addressing:
1) the StopForumSpam works on them (hit/miss on IPV6 addresses)
2) the logs now have all 4 octets in them.. the shared server forced the logs to have '0' for the last octet.. not so helpful in reporting abusive IP addresses to ISPs for spammers/harvesters.

So far, the VPS isn't even breaking a sweat.  Load factors < 0.4 most of the time, so 2 CPUs and current RAM look like more than able to handle the customary loading.  Also, PHP 7.4.1 is quite zippy with improved Zend engine.  I'm happy :)

Happy to contribute to this project. Whatever it takes to prevent hacks and malevolent software from disabling this forum.  [tup]

I think we're more stable now on the VPS -- it's a smaller VPS than the one I've used for several years to host my site (and a bunch of the regional network sites) with no issues to speak of.  Tech support for VPSs gets a unix geek on the first call who can dig in and help, so that's a big advantage.

The site no longer depends on a shared mySQL server -- the service runs on the VPS and is inaccessible from the internet.. it's addressed as 'localhost' :)
Both our giant outages (November and December 2019) were due to a shared mySQL server that was only repairable by the mystical 3rd level support who always take a long time to respond to the supplications of the 1st/2nd level support for shared servers.

The 'container' that defines the virtual server has a firewall and we only open the needed ports for operation.  There is also a firewall service running on the OS that controls access (along with fail2ban, root-kit detector, Apache mod_auth, etc).  All software is at current levels (and will stay that way).  We're even running PHP 7.4.1 for the site, along with the latest SMF 2.0.17.

We are back! :)
I missed the announcement and was confused when I couldn't access WXForum. Although someone replied to a post while it was still inaccessible for me, but I'm happy it's back.

I 'don't like' the other.

Is it possible to change the forum's skin/theme to black & white for everybody please, since I 'like' my B&W TV set?

Seriously though, +2 on supporting IPv6 again, for those of us boldly living the AAAA life with our own static /56 address pool at home.....

Yes, the website has a faster response.  The server is showing load factors < 0.4 while our old shared server cruised around 17 (quite loaded).  We aren't competing with other unrelated websites (likely 200+) for resources anymore.  Only 3 sites on this VPS: Wxforum.net, cumuluswiki.wxforum.net and the global hub for the regional networks (northamericanweather.net).  WXForum.net is the most visited of the three sites.

Glad you are all fixed now.  For anyone else with same problem...

Clear browser cache:
https://refreshyourcache.com/en/cache/

Also restart your modem/router so that it forces DNS to refresh (old DNS should have expired already though...but can't hurt).
Reboot computer to do the same (clearing of DNS) or in Windows C: prompt do:
ipconfig /flushdns
for Mac OS X varies:
